Acute Appendicitis or Lymphoid Hyperplasia: How to Distinguish More Safely?
Lymphoid hyperplasia can be an important mimicker of acute appendicitis by creating a non-compressible appendix more than 6  mm in diameter. The aim of this study was to evaluate methods of distinguishing lymphoid hyperplasia and appendicitis on the basis of sonography, lamina propria thickness, and Alvarado scoring. Sharing De-identified Medical Images Electronically for Research: A Survey of Patients' Opinion Regarding Data Management
Secondary usage of patient data has recently become of increasing interest for the development and application of computer analytic techniques. Strict oversight of these data is required and the individual patients themselves are integral to providing guidance. We sought to understand patients' attitudes to sharing their imaging data for research purposes. These images could provide a great wealth of information for researchers. Outcomes After Percutaneous Angioplasty of Arteriovenous Fistulas and Grafts in African American Patients
Arteriovenous fistulas and grafts, necessary for hemodialysis, may develop stenoses due to neointimal hyperplasia, which often require percutaneous transluminal angioplasty. Patient and lesion characteristics were evaluated prior to angioplasty and were correlated with 1- and 6-month outcomes. (Source: Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal)

Canadian Association of Radiologists Position Statement on Point-of-Care Ultrasound
Ultrasound is a workhorse in the diagnostic workup of patients in a wide variety of clinical settings, due to its high diagnostic sensitivity, lack of ionizing radiation, minimal invasiveness, and low cost. Continuing technological advancements have improved the portability of ultrasound machines and facilitated their use in ambulatory and emergency settings. An ultrasound service under the auspices of a medical imaging department or clinic remains the traditional model for the practice of ultrasound. (Source: Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal)

Farewell to the Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal
Truth is not for all man but only for those who seek it.Ayn RandI am leaving the Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal (CARJ) after serving as an editor for less than a year. Dr Michael Patlas, who is one of the journal's deputy editors, has taken the role of editor-in-chief as of July 2019. I wish him and his team well in their endeavor. Medical Malpractice Primer for Practicing Interventional Radiologists
Medical professional liability (MPL), also commonly referred to as medical malpractice, is a costly issue in health care today, accounting for roughly 2.4% of total health care expenditure in the United States. Almost all physicians currently in clinical practice will either be subject to a lawsuit themselves or work with someone who has. Given a lack of formal structured education about MPL in medicine for trainees, this review aims to define and discuss the relevant concepts in MPL as a reference for early career interventionalists to understand the current medicolegal environment and learn best practices to avoid litiga...

Lumpectomy Specimen Radiography: Does Orientation or 3-Dimensional Tomosynthesis Improve Margin Assessment?
Our purpose was twofold. First, we sought to determine whether 2 orthogonal oriented views of excised breast cancer specimens could improve surgical margin assessment compared to a single unoriented view. Second, we sought to determine whether 3D tomosynthesis could improve surgical margin assessment compared to 2D mammography alone. (Source: Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal)

Late Gadolinium Hyperintensity of Suspected Colorectal Liver Metastases on Gadofosveset-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging: A Predictor of Benignity and a Potential Problem-Solving Tool
Late gadolinium hyperintensity (LGH) is sometimes seen in colorectal liver metastasis (CRLM) and represents a significant diagnostic pitfall due to overlap with LGH in benign hemangiomas; therefore, the objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of LGH and the ability of LGH to differentiate between CRLM and benign lesions with intravascular (gadofosveset) vs extracellular contrast agents (gadobutrol). Updated Clinical Practice Guideline on Use of Gadolinium-Based Contrast Agents in Kidney Disease Issued by the Canadian Association of Radiologists
In 2017, the Canadian Association of Radiologists issued a clinical practice guideline (CPG) regarding the use of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) in patients with acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease (CKD), or on dialysis due to mounting evidence indicating that nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) occurs with extreme rarity or not at all when using Group II GBCAs or the Group III GBCA gadoxetic acid (compared to first generation Group I linear GBCAs). One of the goals of the work group was to re-evaluate the CPG after 24  months to determine the effect of more liberal use of GBCA on reported cases of...

Canadian Association of Radiologists White Paper on Ethical and Legal Issues Related to Artificial Intelligence in Radiology
Artificial intelligence (AI) software that analyzes medical images is becoming increasingly prevalent. Unlike earlier generations of AI software, which relied on expert knowledge to identify imaging features, machine learning approaches automatically learn to recognize these features. However, the promise of accurate personalized medicine can only be fulfilled with access to large quantities of medical data from patients. This data could be used for purposes such as predicting disease, diagnosis, treatment optimization, and prognostication. (Source: Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal)
