Lower Esophageal Disorders in Childhood Evaluated by Transabdominal Ultrasound and Fluoroscopy: A Pictorial Essay
Pediatric lower esophageal disorders and diseases are rare in the pediatric population. The most common include hiatus hernia, achalasia, duplication cyst, esophageal varices, and esophagitis. In all these disorders transabdominal sonography and fluoroscopy are able to provide substantial diagnostic data, including both morphologic and functional information of the lower esophagus. The educational objective of this pictorial essay is to review the technique of esophageal ultrasound and fluoroscopy, as well as the imaging findings of the commonest pediatric lower esophageal disorders. Staging Computed Tomography in Patients With Noncurative Laparotomy for Periampullary Cancer: Does Nonstructured Reporting Adequately Communicate Resectability?
Periampullary cancer (PC) is a term encompassing malignancies that originate near the ampulla of Vater. It includes cancers of the head and neck of the pancreas, distal common bile duct, second part of the duodenum, and the ampulla itself. Differentiating between these entities, even with biopsy, is often not possible. Therefore, PC is managed identically to pancreatic adenocarcinoma, the fourth leading cause of cancer death in the United States despite representing only 3.1% of new cancer diagnoses [1]. The Ottawa Hospital RADiologist Activity Reporting (RADAR) Productivity Metric: Effects on Radiologist Productivity
Productivity is challenging to measure in a complex radiology organization. This is particularly true in an academic department where radiologists have a broad portfolio of scholarship and obligations, including clinical service, education, administration, and research. We developed the Ottawa RADiologist Activity Reporting (RADAR) score, which is a radiologist productivity measurement system designed to recognize both clinical and academic productivity and to express that productivity with a simple metric. Choosing Wisely Canada and Diagnostic Imaging: What Level of  Evidence Supports the Recommendations?
The diagnostic capabilities of modern medicine have exponentially expanded with the advances in technology. These advancements have, on one hand, contributed to improved accuracy of diagnosis and reductions in patient morbidity [1,2], while simultaneously resulting in increased utilisation and therefore higher and rising healthcare costs [3 –6]. Between 1999-2004, annual Medicare spending on diagnostic imaging in the United States increased from US$5.8 billion to US$10.9 billion [7], while in Canada, approximately 10% of all healthcare dollars are spent on diagnostic imaging, with Ontario alone spending over CAD $1.5 bil...

How Can Radiologists and Radiology Journals Stay Current and Adapt to  Open Access Publishing?
The advent of electronic academic publishing has revolutionized the speed at which biomedical knowledge can be disseminated. Initially, with the widespread availability of the internet, many journals began to publish digital content in complement to their paper journals. However, increasingly, many journals and publishers are launching their content exclusively in an electronic format. When compared to the costs related to printing and mailing physical copies of journals, digital publishing provides a relatively low-cost distribution model [1]. What Is the Role of the Bacterium Propionibacterium acnes in Type 1 Modic Changes? A Review of the Literature
This review presents a summary of the pathology and epidemiology of Modic changes and the possible role of Propionibacterium acnes. This information is followed by a synthesis of the most recent clinical research involved in culturing the discs of patients with degenerative disc disease for the presence of bacteria. We also discuss a randomized controlled trial that investigates the effects of antibiotics on patients with chronic low back pain and type 1 Modic changes. We conclude with a brief discussion of the difficulties involved in this research and the significance of the findings. (Source: Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal)

Variable Appearances of Ductal Carcinoma In Situ Calcifications on Digital Mammography, Synthesized Mammography, and Tomosynthesis: A Pictorial Essay
This pictorial essay demonstrates the variable appearances of ductal carcinoma in situ on full-field digital mammography, synthesized mammography, and digital breast tomosynthesis. The spectrum of intercase and intracase variability suggests further refinement of reconstruction algorithms for synthesized mammography may be necessary to maximize early detection of ductal carcinoma in situ.
