Atypical Femoral Fracture Alert Program
We thank Dr. Lian and colleagues for their recent audit and description of the features of atypical femoral fractures (AFFs) in a large acute-care Canadian institution. In their review of 204 subtrochanteric fractures, radiologists had diagnosed AFF in only 1 of the 24 patients with characteristic radiographic signs of AFF [1]. We have been advocating for an “AFF alert program,” and these findings highlight that need. Inadequate capture of the presence of an AFF in the radiology report is a major concern across Canada and has resulted in the continuation of bisphosphonate therapy or denosumab therapy in the presence of...

Tribute to Dr Benvon Cramer
Dr Benvon Cramer passed peacefully away at home on January 2, 2015, after a courageous battle with breast cancer, at 64  years of age. She was a superb physician, teacher, and researcher; a cherished colleague; a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt; and a very dear friend. Intravenous and Oral Contrast vs Intravenous Contrast Alone Computed Tomography for the Visualization of Appendix and Diagnosis of Appendicitis in Adult Emergency Department Patients
The study sought to compare radiologist's ability to 1) visualize the appendix; 2) diagnose acute appendicitis; and 3) diagnose alternative pathologies responsible for acute abdominal pain among adult patients undergoing computed tomography (CT) scan with 3 different protocols: 1) intravenous (IV) contrast only; 2) IV and oral contrast with 1-hour transit time; and 3) IV and oral contrast with 3-hour transit time. Appearance of Focal Liver Lesions Using Contrast-Enhanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging Using Gadofosveset Trisodium, an Intravascular (Blood-Pool) Contrast Agent: A Pictorial Essay
Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of focal liver lesions is typically performed with either extracellular or hepatobiliary-specific contrast agents. Although intravascular contrast agents are often used in contrast-enhanced ultrasound imaging of focal liver lesions, these agents are not typically used for MR imaging [1]. Usefulness of Canadian Public Health Insurance Administrative Databases  to Assess Breast and Ovarian Cancer Screening Imaging Technologies for BRCA1/2 Mutation Carriers
In Canada, recommendations for clinical management of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer among individuals carrying a deleterious BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutation have been available since 2007. Eight years later, very little is known about the uptake of screening and risk-reduction measures in this population. Because Canada's public health care system falls under provincial jurisdictions, using provincial health care administrative databases appears a valuable option to assess management of BRCA1/2 mutation carriers. Are We Missing Traumatic Bowel and Mesenteric Injuries?
Traumatic bowel and mesenteric injury (TBMI), although an uncommon entity, can be lethal if not detected and treated in a timely manner. The purpose of our study was to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of 64-slice multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) for the detection of TBMI in patients at our level 1 trauma centre. Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Patients With Mechanical Low Back Pain Using a Novel Rapid-Acquisition Three-Dimensional SPACE Sequence at 1.5-T: A Pilot Study Comparing Lumbar Stenosis Assessment With Routine Two-Dimensional Magnetic Resonance Sequences
To minimize the burden of overutilisation of lumbar spine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on a resource-constrained public healthcare system, it may be helpful to image some patients with mechanical low-back pain (LBP) using a simplified rapid MRI screening protocol at 1.5-T. A rapid-acquisition 3-dimensional (3D) SPACE (Sampling Perfection with Application-optimized Contrasts using different flip angle Evolution) sequence can demonstrate common etiologies of LBP. We compared lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS) and neural foraminal stenosis (LNFS) assessment on 3D SPACE against conventional 2-dimensional (2D) MRI. (Source...

Determination of the Best Parameter for Defining the Hemodynamic Significance of an Iliac Artery Stenosis Detected on Computed Tomography Angiography
The purpose of this study was to determine the best parameter, derived from computed tomography angiography (CTA) for accurate prediction of a hemodynamically significant stenosis of the common or external iliac artery. (Source: Canadian Association of Radiologists Journal)
