Parting Shots - Why I left my Social Work Post and What I'd change
Reblogged from Fighting Monsters: I left my job as a Mental Health Social Worker, AMHP, BIA, Practice Educator and all that I wrote about here last December. While I can’t be too specific about my current role, it’s (unsurprisingly really) in a related field but it’s moved me into the background and away from a direct role with people. It’s been nearly ten months now since I changed jobs and it has led me to reflect on what ‘being a social worker’ meant to my identity and how I viewed myself as well as how others viewed me. One Third Of Homeless People Hit By Benefit Sanctions
Reblogged from the void: A damning report has been published by Homeless Link which reveals that one third of homeless people on unemployment benefits, and just under a fifth of those on the sickness and disability benefit Employment Support Allowance, have had benefits stopped or sanctioned for failing to carry out 'Work Related Activity'. According to Homeless Link, who are an umbrella body for homelessness organisations, many of those sanctioned have mental health conditions, learning disabilities or substance use problems.  Read more… 621 more words (Source: Dawn Willis sharing the News and Views of the Mentally Wealthy)

Blogging On with The Mentalists! #mentalhealth #mhchat #disability
It’s been an odd few months and I can’t really find a nutshell big enough to hold everything that’s happened. My family have endured some turbulent times and celebrated joyful moments. For those who don’t already know, my eldest son, Matt, developed a brain tumour and had to undergo emergency surgery.  It was the a devastating time, but we are blessed,  it was benign and despite it being a long road to recovery we can safely say he is so much better. Struggling with the fallout has not been easy, and for weeks, since that dreadful day in July when we got the news, it’s been a tough, tiring a...

Do Not Support Newly Disabled Claimants Hit By Benefit Cap To Stay In Their Homes Recommends DWP
Reblogged from the void: The DWP has issued guidance to local authorities suggesting that newly sick or disabled claimants affected by the Benefit Cap should go into arrears rather than be awarded Discretionary Housing Payments to cover a shortfall in their rent whilst they await or appeal a benefit decision. In a further callous move, the Department recommends that the most seriously sick and disabled claimants - who are appealing a decision made by the notorious Atos Work Capability Assessment not to place them in the Support Group - should not be provided with emergency housing payments to top up their rent whilst the a...

Yet more DWP illegality
Reblogged from The SKWAWKBOX Blog: A couple of weeks ago, I drew attention to how DWP minister Mark Hoban was unable, even in a formal response to an MP, to get his facts straight on the law regarding what the DWP's Jobcentre Plus (JCP) is legally allowed to force - or 'mandate' - jobseekers to do. Hoban thought that the DWP and its agents have the right to issue a 'jobseeker's direction' (JSD) - an instruction that results in a sanction (suspension of benefits) if the jobseeker doesn't comply - to make jobseekers use the highly-flawed and controversial… Read more… 480 more words (Source: Dawn Willis sharin...
