Understanding Ethical Issues of Research Participation From the Perspective of Participating Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review
The objective of this analysis was to examine ethical issues in research with children and adolescents from their perspective as participants, including: assent, parental consent, risk perception, impact of research participation, and incentives. MethodsThis systematic review was conducted per the Long, Godfrey, Randall, Brettle, and Grant framework by means of an iterative searching process. Using the key words “research ethics” and “child or pediatric or adolescent,” PubMed, CINAHL, and EBSCOhost databases were searched to identify articles. Limitations placed on the searches were: English language, year of publi...

Benefits of a Regional Evidence ‐Based Practice Fellowship Program: A Test of the ARCC Model
This study evaluated whether a regional EBP fellowship program improved participants’ EBP beliefs, EBP implementation, job satisfaction, group cohesion, and group attractiveness, and examined the relationships among these improvements, using structural equation modeling. MethodsA pretest–posttest design was used among three annual cohorts of a regional, 9‐month EBP fellowship program, from 2012 to 2014, in San Diego, California. Matched pretest and posttest questionnaires, including EBP Beliefs, EBP Implementation, Job Satisfaction, Group Cohesion, and Group Attractiveness scales, were analyzed (N = 120). ResultsPair...

Measuring Nurses ’ Value, Implementation, and Knowledge of Evidence‐Based Practice: Further Psychometric Testing of the Quick‐EBP‐VIK Survey
ABSTRACT BackgroundThe Quick‐EBP‐VIK is a new instrument for measuring nurses’ value, implementation, and knowledge of EBP. Psychometric testing was conducted in two parts. Part 1 describes the tool development and validity testing which resulted in the development of a 25‐item survey after receiving ≥0.80 Item‐Level Content Validity Index for both clarity and relevance. Part 2 describes psychometric testing was necessary to assess additional types of validity and reliability. AimThe purpose of this paper is to further describe the psychometric testing of the Quick‐EBP‐VIK survey instrument. MethodsThis des...

Behavioral Emergency Response Team: Implementation Improves Patient Safety, Staff Safety, and Staff Collaboration
The objectives of this evidence‐based practice process improvement project were to determine how implementation of a BERT affects staff and patient safety and to examine nursing staffs’ level of knowledge, confidence, and support in caring for psychiatric patients and patients exhibiting behavioral emergencies. MethodsA BERT was piloted on one MS unit for 5 months and expanded to two additional units for 3 months. Pre‐ and postimplementation staff surveys were conducted, and the number of staff assaults and injuries, restraint usage, and security intervention were compared. ResultsThe BERT responded to 17 behavioral ...

Effectiveness of an Evidence ‐Based Practice Nurse Mentor Training Program
ABSTRACT BackgroundMultiple reasons are cited for why nurses do not incorporate evidence into clinical practice, including lack of knowledge and skills, training, time, and organizational support. AimsTo investigate the effectiveness of a mentor training program on mentors’ perceptions of knowledge, attitude, skill, and confidence levels, and organizational readiness related to evidence‐based practice (EBP) and research utilization; and to investigate the effectiveness of creating a formalized structure to enculturate EBP in order to prepare nurses to incorporate EBP into clinical practice on nurses’ perceptions of k...

Development and Psychometric Properties of the Nursing Critical Thinking in Clinical Practice Questionnaire
ABSTRACT Background and AimA complex healthcare environment, with greater need for care based on the patient and evidence‐based practice, are factors that have contributed to the increased need for critical thinking in professional competence. At the theoretical level, Alfaro‐LeFevre () put forward a model of critical thinking made up of four components. And although these explain the construct, instruments for their empirical measurement are lacking. The purpose of the study was to develop and validate the psychometric properties of an instrument, the Nursing Critical Thinking in Clinical Practice Questionnaire (N‐C...

Use of the PARIHS Framework for Retrospective and Prospective Implementation Evaluations
ABSTRACT BackgroundThe Promoting Action on Research Implementation in Health Services (PARIHS) framework has been used by implementation researchers to assess factors impacting implementation and to use that information to identify optimal interventions and implementation strategies. In this paper, two studies are presented demonstrating the utility of PARIHS as a tool for retrospective and prospective evaluation of implementation in the health care setting. Study DesignDescriptive case study. MethodsA qualitative consensus process was used to evaluate provider perceptions of PARIHS constructs of evidence, context, and fac...
