A Comparison of the Incidence of Post ‐Dural Puncture Headache and Backache After Spinal Anesthesia: A Pragmatic Randomized Controlled Trial
This study was a pragmatic, parallel‐group, blinded, and randomized controlled trial (trial registration number KCT0001797). A total of 119 patients who underwent surgery under spinal anesthesia participated in this study from December 2013 to June 2014. The participants were randomly allocated to three groups: the immediate mobilization group (n = 45), 4‐hour bed rest group (n = 40), and 6‐hour bed rest group (n = 34). The severity of headache and backache was measured using the Dittmann scale and a visual analogue scale, respectively. Data were collected for 5 consecutive days postoperatively by one researcher blin...

Quality of Life of Intermittent Urinary Catheterization Users and Their Caregivers: A Scoping Review
This study aimed to examine and map the scientific evidences regarding quality of life in neurogenic bladder patients and consequently their caregivers by means of a scoping review. DesignThis is a scoping review proposal of the Joanna Briggs Institute. MethodsIt was conducted to examine and map the scientific evidences about quality of life (QoL) in neurogenic bladder patients and their caregivers, to identify the meanings attributed to QoL and its relation with intermittent urinary catheterization. The following guiding question was: “What scientific evidence has been produced on the QoL of neurogenic bladder patients ...

Tai Chi Exercise for the Quality of Life in a Perimenopausal Women Organization: A Systematic Review
ABSTRACT BackgroundImprovement of the quality of life in perimenopausal women has recently become an important global health issue. Extensive research reports provide evidence of Tai Chi for the quality of life, but no systematic review has individually investigated Tai Chi as a main intervention on the quality of life in perimenopausal women. ObjectiveTo assess clinical evidence of Tai Chi for the quality of life in perimenopausal women. MethodsStudies related to the effect of Tai Chi on the quality of life in perimenopausal women in the databases of China and abroad were searched. RevMan version 5.2 software was used, an...

Patient Characteristics Associated With a Successful Response to Nurse ‐Led Care Programs Targeting the Oldest‐Old: A Comparison of Two RCTs
ABSTRACT BackgroundTo improve the effectiveness of community‐based care programs, especially those targeting the oldest‐old population (80+), data are needed that elucidate those factors associated with a successful response to the intervention. Two comparable nurse‐led care programs have been evaluated in two large randomized controlled trials (RCTs), one in Switzerland and one in the Netherlands. AimsTo identify common patient characteristics that are related to a successful response to proactive nurse‐led care, we explored if and to what extent, identical factors were present in both study populations. MethodsA ...

Iowa Model of Evidence ‐Based Practice: Revisions and Validation
ConclusionThis user driven revision differs from other frameworks in that it links practice changes within the system. Major model changes are expansion of piloting, implementation, patient engagement, and sustaining change. Linking Evidence to ActionThe Iowa Model‐Revised remains an application‐oriented guide for the EBP process. Intended users are point of care clinicians who ask questions and seek a systematic, EBP approach to promote excellence in health care. (Source: Worldviews on Evidence-Based Nursing)

Frailty as a Predictor of Future Fracture in Older Adults: A Systematic Review and Meta ‐Analysis
ABSTRACT BackgroundStudies have identified frailty as an effective predictor of fracture; however, the correlation between frailty and fracture differs between various stages of frailty. ObjectivesThe main aim is to determine the correlation between various stages of frailty and fracture risk; a secondary purpose is to determine the correlation between subgroups (e.g., females, females with a hip fracture, or aged 65 years or older) within the stages of frailty and fracture risk. Finally, effect of frailty criteria on the association between stages of frailty and fracture risk was tested. MethodsWe conducted a systematic r...

A Novel Implementation Strategy in Residential Care Settings to Promote EBP: Direct Care Provider Perceptions and Development of a Conceptual Framework
This study aims to (a) identify healthcare aide (HCA) perceptions of a peer reminder role for HCAs, and (b) develop a conceptual framework for the role based on these perceptions. MethodsIn 2013, a qualitative focus group study was conducted in five purposively sampled residential care facilities in western Canada. A convenience sample of 24 HCAs agreed to participate in five focus groups. Concurrent with data collection, two researchers coded the transcripts and identified themes by consensus. They jointly determined when saturation was achieved and took steps to optimize the trustworthiness of the findings. Five HCAs fro...

An Evidence ‐Based Approach to Reducing Cardiac Telemetry Alarm Fatigue
ABSTRACT BackgroundIt is estimated that between 80% and 99% of alarms in the clinical areas are in actionable alarms (Gross, Dahl, & Nielson). Alarm management is one of the Joint Commission's National Patient Safety Goals (2014) because sentinel events have directly been linked to the devices generating these alarms. PurposeAt an acute care facility in Boston, a multidisciplinary team consisting of Nursing, Biomedical Engineers, Patient Safety and Providers was formed to conduct a pilot study on the state of telemetry alarms on a surgical floor. MethodsAn evidence‐based approach was taken utilizing Philips Real‐ti...
