Comparison of midazolam and diazepam as co‐induction agents with ketamine for anaesthesia in sedated ponies undergoing field castration
Conclusions and clinical relevanceMidazolam and diazepam at 0.06 mg kg−1 can be used interchangeably in combination with ketamine for IV induction of short term anaesthesia in ponies. (Source: Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia)

Comparison of the effects of propofol or alfaxalone for anaesthesia induction and maintenance on respiration in cats
Conclusion and clinical relevanceAlfaxalone had less adverse influence on respiration than propofol in cats premedicated with medetomidine. Alfaxalone might be better than propofol for induction and maintenance of anaesthesia when artificial ventilation cannot be provided. (Source: Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia)

Comparison of epidural versus intrathecal anaesthesia in dogs undergoing pelvic limb orthopaedic surgery
Conclusions and clinical relevanceHIA was found to have lower PF, lower intraoperative analgesic failure and faster motor block resolution. In this study HIA was shown to provide some advantages over EA in dogs undergoing commonly performed pelvic limb orthopaedic surgery in a day‐hospital regime. Cardiovascular tolerance of intravenous lidocaine in broiler chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) anesthetized with isoflurane
Conclusions and clinical relevancePrevious reports state that the dose of lidocaine used in birds should be ≤4 mg kg−1. In this study, 6 mg kg−1 of lidocaine injected IV was not associated with adverse cardiovascular effects. These results suggest that the dose of 4 mg kg−1 can be exceeded, at least in chickens, and opens the possibility of other therapeutic uses for lidocaine in birds. Comparison of three ultrasound guided approaches to the lumbar plexus in dogs: a cadaveric study
Conclusion and clinical relevanceAn ultrasound‐guided lateral paravertebral approach to the LP proved very practical and accurate, with easy visualization of the plexus and associated nerves. To ensure that the ON is covered by injectate, an approach at the level of L7 is recommended. Further studies are necessary to determine if this correlates with clinically effective local anesthesia. Assessing the influence of mechanical ventilation on blood gases and blood pressure in rattlesnakes
Conclusions and clinical relevanceMechanical ventilation had a profound impact on blood gases and blood pressure. The results support the use of mechanical ventilation with a frequency of 1–2 breaths minute−1 at a tidal volume of 30 mL kg−1 during anesthesia in fasted snakes. Perioperative physiology and pharmacology in the obese small animal patient
ConclusionsObesity of cats and dogs is a chronic inflammatory condition that is increasingly prevalent. Similar to the situation in humans, small animal obesity may be associated with changes in endocrine, respiratory, and cardiovascular function. In addition, alteration of body composition in obesity can affect pharmacokinetic variables. Modifications in perioperative care may need to be made for obese dogs and cats, including attention to respiratory and cardiovascular supportive care and drug dose adjustments. A study of measurement of noninvasive blood pressure with the oscillometric device, Sentinel, in isoflurane‐anaesthetized horses
Conclusion and clinical relevanceAccording to the high variability of NIBP compared to IBP, NIBP measurements as measured by the Sentinel in the manner described here are not considered as an appropriate alternative to IBP to measure blood pressure in anaesthetized horses.
