Effects of intramuscular dexmedetomidine in combination with ketamine or alfaxalone in swine
Conclusions and clinical relevanceIM dexmedetomidine in combination with ketamine in pigs induced moderate to deep sedation and fair to smooth induction of anaesthesia. When dexmedetomidine was combined with alfaxalone, sedation was deeper, and induction was of a better quality. (Source: Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia)

The effect of butorphanol on the incidence of dexmedetomidine‐induced emesis in cats
Conclusions and clinical relevanceButorphanol can be used to prevent emesis and reduce the incidence and the severity of nausea caused by DEX in cats. It seems that the combination of BUT and DEX is very useful not only when emesis could result in serious complications, but also to provide comfort and well‐being in cats sedated for minor procedures. Clinical evaluation of the v‐gel supraglottic airway device in comparison with a classical laryngeal mask and endotracheal intubation in cats during spontaneous and controlled mechanical ventilation
Conclusions and clinical relevanceThe v‐gel is a practical alternative to the LM and ETT for securing the airway after induction of anaesthesia and for CMV up to 16 cm H2O in healthy cats. The v‐gel can be inserted at a more superficial level of anaesthesia than the ETT and showed significantly less leakage during CMV than the ETT. (Source: Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia)

Retrospective study of the perioperative management and complications of ureteral obstruction in 37 cats
Conclusion and clinical relevanceIntraoperative anaesthetic complications were common; increased age, poor health status, preoperative bicarbonate administration, hyperkalaemia and increased creatinine were associated with increased risk for death and can be used to predict risk for complications. The sedative effects of intramuscular low‐dose medetomidine in combination with butorphanol or methadone in dogs
Conclusions and clinical relevanceCombinations of a low dose of medetomidine with butorphanol or methadone, respectively, provide similar degrees of sedation. (Source: Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia)

The effect of social isolation, gender and familiarity with the experimental procedure on tests of porcine nociceptive thresholds
Conclusions and clinical relevanceThe current results reiterate the value of habituation in research involving animal behaviour. Further characterization of the methodology is needed to allow its application in the evaluation of clinical conditions in pigs. (Source: Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia)

Chloramphenicol significantly affects the pharmacokinetics of oral methadone in Greyhound dogs
Conclusions and clinical relevanceThis study demonstrated significant effects of chloramphenicol on the pharmacokinetics of oral methadone. Further studies should investigate the effects of chloramphenicol on methadone pharmacokinetics in multiple dog breeds and examine whether oral methadone would be an effective analgesic in dogs. In addition, the safety of chloramphenicol and its effects on the pharmacokinetics of parenteral methadone warrant assessment. (Source: Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia)

Alfaxalone anesthesia by immersion in oriental fire‐bellied toads (Bombina orientalis)
Conclusions and clinical relevanceIt was concluded that alfaxalone anesthesia induced by immersion in a concentration of 200 mg L−1 is only suitable for toads undergoing non‐invasive short procedures. (Source: Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia)

Conclusions and clinical relevanceMidazolam (0.2–0.5 mg kg−1) and diazepam (0.3–0.5 mg kg−1) administered IV after 2 mg kg−1 propofol significantly reduced the propofol dose required for tracheal intubation. (Source: Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia)

Assessment of a carbon dioxide laser for the measurement of thermal nociceptive thresholds following intramuscular administration of analgesic drugs in pain‐free female cats
Conclusions and clinical relevanceThe CO2 laser technique may have utility in the assessment of thermal nociceptive thresholds in pain‐free cats after analgesic administration and may provide a simpler alternative to existing systems. Further exploration is required to examine its sensitivity and comparative utility. (Source: Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia)
