Effect of the different finishing and polishing procedures on the surface roughness of three different posterior composite resins
In this study it was aimed to examine the effect of three different posterior composites on surface texture with various finishing and polishing procedures. Three different posterior composites, Filtek P60, Clearfil Majesty Posterior and Cavex Quadent Posterior Dense, and three different finishing and polishing procedures diamond finishing burs, tungsten carbide burs and Sof‐Lex discs were used in the study. The specimens were 5 mm in diameter and 2 mm in height. The surface roughness was measured at three seperate points with a profilometer device and the Ra values were recorded. A one‐way analysis of variance (AN...

Effect of different parameters of Er:YAG laser irradiations on class V composite restorations: A scanning electron microscopy study
Summary The purpose of this study was to compare different parameters of Er:YAG laser irradiations on the marginal microleakage of Class V resin composite restorations. A total of 45 extracted premolars were selected for the study. Class V cavities prepared on both buccal and lingual surfaces of teeth by Er:YAG laser or bur and divided into nine groups. The occlusal margins were in enamel and the cervical margins were in cementum. Group‐1: bur preparation; Group‐2: laser preparation (lp) (600 mJ/5 Hz); Group‐3: lp (300 mJ/10 Hz); Group‐4: lp (200 mJ/15 Hz); Group‐5: lp (150 mJ/20 Hz); Group‐6: l...

Quantitative analysis of the cell ‐surface roughness and viscoelasticity for breast cancer cells discrimination using atomic force microscopy
In this study, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was applied to characterize and compare the surface nanostructure and viscoelasticity of different breast cell lines. Our results show that breast cancerous cells MCF‐7 exhibit more disorganized filamentous cytoskeleton structure with increased membrane roughness compared to benign breast cells MCF‐10A (P < 0.05). The viscoelastic properties, including elasticity and viscosity, are significantly different between the two cell lines. MCF‐7 displays reduced elasticity and viscosity, indicating that breast cancer cells are softer and more fluid than benign counterpart....

The combined occluding effect of sodium fluoride varnish and Nd:YAG laser irradiation on dentinal tubules—A CLSM and SEM study
Summary The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dentinal tubule occlusion potential and penetration of Clinpro® White Varnish (5% sodium fluoride + tri‐calcium phosphate) in the presence or absence of Nd:YAG laser. Seventy‐five dentin samples collected from 38 freshly extracted human molars were randomly divided into five groups (n = 15). Groups A, B, D, and E were varnished with Clinpro, whereas group C (no treatment) served as the control group. Groups B and E were further irradiated with Nd:YAG laser (1.5 W, 10 Hz, 1 min). All study groups were subjected to pH cycling (kept in 0.3% citric acid 5...

Changes in surface characteristics of two different resin composites after 1 year water storage: An SEM and AFM study
Summary To evaluate changes in surface characteristics of two different resin composites after 1 year of water storage using a profilometer, Vickers hardness, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). A total of 46 composite disk specimens (10 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick) were fabricated using Clearfil Majesty Esthetic and Clearfil Majesty Posterior (Kuraray Medical Co, Tokyo, Japan). Ten specimens from each composite were used for surface roughness and microhardness tests (n = 10). For each composite, scanning electron microscope (SEM, n = 2) and atomic force microscope (AFM, n...

A radiofrequency system for in vivo hyperpolarized 13C MRS experiments in mice with a 3T MRI clinical scanner
Summary Hyperpolarized carbon‐13 magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) is a powerful tool to explore tissue metabolic state, by permitting the study of intermediary metabolism of biomolecules in vivo. However, a number of technological problems still limit this technology and need innovative solutions. In particular, the low molar concentration of derivate metabolites give rise to low signal‐to‐noise ratio (SNR), which makes the design and development of dedicated radiofrequency (RF) coils a fundamental task. In this article, the authors describe the simulation and the design of a RF coils configuration for MR experi...

Radiological, stereological, and microscopic evaluation of the quality of canal fillings in oval ‐shaped root canals prepared with self‐adjusting file
Summary The aim of this study was to evaluate the quality of the canal fillings performed by thermoplastic technique (Herofill) and cold lateral condensation (CLC) techniques in oval shaped canals following self‐adjusting file (SAF) preparation using radiological, stereological, and microscopic evaluation methods. Twelve pairs of oval‐shaped root canals were prepared with SAF and filled using CLC (n = 12) or the Herofill system (n = 12). The quality of the root canal filling was evaluated by (i) scoring bidirectional storage phosphor plate images, (ii) stereological (volumetric) analysis of cone beam computeriz...
