Unexpected Fe‐enriched compounds observed in Mg–Ce alloy: An atomic‐scale STEM investigation
Summary This paper investigates into the unexpected nanosize Fe‐enriched particles with defects incorporated, using EDS under STEM mode and atomic‐resolution HAADF. The particle that locates between eutectic Mg12Ce phase and α‐Mg phase is identified as CeFe2Si2 compound. Two types of defects are incorporated: Type‐I defect is Ce‐Si in a simple cubic lattice; Type‐II defect is Ce in a FCC lattice. The interface between the defect‐free CeFe2Si2 and the defects is fully coherent. In addition, another two Ce/Fe/Si‐enriched particles are observed, proving that the enrichment of Ce, Fe, and Si is not an accident...

The effect of different beverages on the color and translucency of flowable composites
This study examined the changes in color and translucency of flowable composites after immersion in different beverages. Thirty composite samples were prepared from four flowable composites (G‐aenial Universal Flo, Filtek Ultimate, Esthelite Flow Quick, and Clearfil Majesty ES Flow) and a microhybrid composite (Filtek Z‐250) and stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h. The samples were randomly divided into seven groups and then immersed in different beverages (Red Bull, coffee, black tea, Pepsi Cola, orange juice, and distilled water) for 7 days. The CIE L*a*b* values of each sample were measured against white a...

N‐acetylcysteine eradicates Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms in bone cement
Summary Biofilm is an example of bacterial group behavior. We investigated the effect of N‐acetylcysteine (NAC) alone and in combination with ciprofloxacin on Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilm formation. Four groups (each contains six molds) of standardized bone cement molds were infected. NAC, ciprofloxacin each alone, and NAC/ciprofloxacin combination were evaluated in point of inhibiting and eradicating biofilm capacity using microbiological and electron microscopical evaluation techniques. Microbial counts and electron microscopical observations showed that the effect of NAC and ciprofloxacin combination on biofilm form...

SEM and TEM for structure and properties characterization of bacterial cellulose/hydroxyapatite composites
Summary Preparation of composites with different properties and gradient of components is aimed at better performance of materials for bone substitution. Bacterial cellulose‐hydroxyapatite (BC‐HAP) composites with various mass ratio of the components (BC‐25HAP, BC‐4HAP, and BC‐HAP) were prepared by a novel method of growing HAP nanocrystals (the linear size ≤30 nm) in water solutions in the presence of the BC gel‐film micro‐fragments. Varying the BC‐HAP ratios leads to a gradual change of the physical properties of the materials. It was found that an increase in the BC content results in a decrease of t...

Multi‐port‐driven birdcage coil for multiple‐mouse MR imaging at 7 T
Summary In ultra‐high field (UHF) imaging environments, it has been demonstrated that multiple‐mouse magnetic resonance imaging (MM‐MRI) is dependent on key factors such as the radiofrequency (RF) coil hardware, imaging protocol, and experimental setup for obtaining high‐resolution MR images. A key aspect is the RF coil, and a number of MM‐MRI studies have investigated the application of single‐channel RF transmit (Tx)/receive (Rx) coils or multi‐channel phased array (PA) coil configurations under a single gradient coil set. However, despite applying a variety of RF coils, Tx (|B1+|)‐field inhomogeneity sti...

Atomic‐scale characterization of the equilibrium β phase in Mg‐Nd‐Y alloy by means of HAADF‐STEM
Summary The β phase in Mg‐Nd‐Y alloy, which forms during isothermal ageing, is proved to be Mg41Nd5 by energy‐dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (EDS) results as compositional evidence and by atomic‐scaled high angle annular dark field–scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF‐STEM) direct images from [001]β, , and as structural evidence. Evaluation of temporomandibular fossa and mandibular condyle in adolescent patients affected by bilateral cleft lip and palate using cone beam computed tomography
Summary The purposes of this study were to investigate the position of the mandibular condyle and temporomandibular fossa between the adolescent patients affected by bilateral cleft lip and palate (BCLP) and well‐matched controls without any cleft by using cone‐beam computed tomography (CBCT). The study sample consisted of 17 patients (7 females and 10 males; mean age, 14.27 ± 2.83 years) affected by BCLP and 17 patients (6 females and 11 males; mean age, 14.27 ± 2.12 years) as age‐and sex‐matched control group without any cleft. Using cone‐beam computed tomography segmented three‐dimensional temporom...
