Intra-correlations between cataract density based on Scheimpflug image, phacodynamics, surgery duration, and endothelial cell loss after phacoemulsification
ConclusionA positive correlations were observed between Scheimpflug-measured lens density with phacodynamic parameters, surgery duration, and endothelial loss. A strong correlation was observed between the degree of endothelial cell loss and phacodynamic parameters but not with the length of the procedure. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Bilateral Idiopathic Orbital Inflammation Syndrome in an adult patient: A rare case report
Publication date: Available online 13 April 2018Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Sandip SarkarAbstractBilateral Idiopathic Orbital Inflammation Syndrome (IOIS) is rare in adults. Most commonly it affects the young adults and children. It is mostly unilateral condition. This is a case of 50 years old male coming with the complaints of painless proptosis on both the eyes for 1 year. The history of diplopia was also found. The real life data of ranibizumab use among the diabetic macular edema patients in Turkey: Documenting the improvement with clinical optimization during three consecutive years
ConclusionsIt is effortful to obey the strict follow-up criteria of prospective studies in DME patients on a PRN regimen. However, optimizing the clinical processes of patient management may lead to improved clinical outcomes in real life. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Corneal deposits following topical moxifloxacin use
In this report, we describe the first case of corneal deposits following the use of preservative-free topical moxifloxacin 0.5% eye drops in a 26-year-old male with keratoconus who underwent a unilateral corneal cross-linking. Increased frequency and prolonged instillation of moxifloxacin eye drops led to corneal precipitation in this patient. Complete resolution of corneal deposits occurred four months after drug discontinuation without sequelae. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Measurement of anterior segment parameters in Saudi adults with myopia
ConclusionThis study provided valuable measurements of the anterior segments parameters of the eye in myopic Saudi population. These parameters could be useful for ophthalmic practitioners in the clinic. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

The use of one muscle recession for horizontal strabismus
ConclusionSingle muscle strabismus surgery to correct horizontal strabismus had a variable outcome. Larger recession may help in achieving better outcomes. Properly designed prospective studies may help in identifying the factors affecting the outcomes of single muscle strabismus surgeries. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

Role of oxidative stress, inflammation, hypoxia and angiogenesis in the development of diabetic retinopathy
Publication date: Available online 29 May 2018Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Abdullah S. Al-KharashivAbstractDiabetic retinopathy (DR) is a retinal disease which is one of the most severe complications occuring due to diabetes mellitus and is a major cause of blindness. Patients who have diabetes mellitus for number of years develop characteristic group of lesions in the retina which leads to Diabetic retinopathy. It is a multifactorial condition occuring due to complex cellular interactions between biochemical and metabolic abnormalities taking place in all retinal cells. Considerable research efforts in...

Efficacy and safety of using topical cyclosporine A for treatment of moderate to severe dry eye disease
ConclusionsCyclosporine A ophthalmic emulsion 0.05% has been demonstrated to be effective and safe in human clinical trials. It reduces signs and symptoms of dry eye disease, with the fact that its effect continued to occur significantly within the treatment periods as well as improvement of ocular condition kept on, actually more slowly towards stability, despite the drug has already stopped. Interface Fluid Syndrome (IFS) following Toxic Anterior Segment Syndrome (TASS): Not related to high intraocular pressure but to endothelial failure
We describe the case of a 52 year-old female with past history of LASIK, 21 years earlier, without Fuchs’ endothelial dystrophy, who underwent phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. During the early postoperative period severe corneal edema, anterior chamber cellularity and iris inflammation presented, accompanied by a clear space along the LASIK interface. Those findings were interpreted as part of a Toxic Anterior Segment Syndrome (TASS) and secondary interface fluid syndrome (IFS). When interface fluid was present, intraocular pressure (IOP) measured in the center of the cornea yielded very l...

Tungiasis infestation of dermis fat graft in an anophthalmic socket
Publication date: Available online 7 July 2018Source: Saudi Journal of OphthalmologyAuthor(s): Alicia Galindo-Ferreiro, Dalal AlEssa, Sahar M. Elkhamary, Deepak P. Edward, Alberto Galvez-Ruiz, Silvana SchelliniAbstractA patient with an anophthalmic socket with a dermis-fat graft (DFG) developed inflammation and a foul odour in the right socket. Recurrent unicystic maxillary ameloblastoma presenting as unilateral proptosis
We report a case of 16-year-old girl presenting with proptosis of left eye, UA left maxilla, who was treated initially with limited resection (enucleation) and curettage and the lesion recurred after two years with a more aggressive behavior, causing destruction floor of orbit. To this date there are only 23 documented cases of orbital invasion and only three of the reports are in ophthalmic literature. The ophthalmologists need to be aware of this type of rare lesion presenting as proptosis. (Source: Saudi Journal of Ophthalmology)

A diagnostic dilemma in a patient with delayed onset endophthalmitis
We report a case of nonpainful uveitis 9 months after an uncomplicated phacoemulsification cataract surgery. Chronic postoperative endophthalmitis was suspected. Diagnostic vitrectomy and partial capsular bag removal was performed, but the specimens cultured in microbiology laboratory showed no pathogens. Systemic workup came positive for skin Tuberculosis test, and presumed intraocular tuberculosis treatment was started accordingly. Inflammation persisted, so a repeat vitrectomy was performed with removal of the lens implant with the capsule, and this time bedside culture inoculation was performed in operating room, rev...
