Reliability of isokinetic evaluation in passive mode for knee flexors and extensors in healthy children
CONCLUSIONS: The findings indicate that isokinetic evaluation in passive mode for knee extensors and flexors of dominant and non-dominant lower limbs of children without disabilities was reliable for peak torque, average peak torque, work, and power. However, average time to peak torque and angle of peak torque were not reliable. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Fisioterapia)

Response of oxygen saturation in preterm infants receiving rib cage stabilization with an elastic band in two body positions: a randomized clinical trial
CONCLUSION: The use of an elastic chest band improves respiratory indicators such as oxygen saturation.

Electrical stimulation and electromagnetic field use in patients with diabetic neuropathy: systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: We found that TENS improved pain relief in patients with diabetic neuropathy, while no such improvement was observed with the use of electromagnetic field treatment. Due to the methodological differences between the studies, a meta-analysis for the outcome of sensitivity could not be performed. (Source: Revista Brasileira de Fisioterapia)

Strength deficit of knee flexors is dependent on hip position in adults with chronic hemiparesis
BACKGROUND: The extent to which muscle length affects force production in paretic lower limb muscles after stroke in comparison to controls has not been established. OBJECTIVES: To investigate knee flexor strength deficits dependent on hip joint position in adults with hemiparesis and compare with healthy controls. METHOD: a cross-sectional study with ten subjects with chronic (63±40 months) hemiparesis with mild to moderate lower limb paresis (Fugl-Meyer score 26±3) and 10 neurologically healthy controls. Isometric knee flexion strength with the hip positioned at 90° and 0° of flexion was assessed randomly on the pare...

Profile of the elderly in physical therapy and its relation to functional disability
CONCLUSIONS: Elderly individuals attended by the geriatric physical therapy service showed a profile associated with disability, characterized by potentially modifiable factors. This profile also reinforces the demand for long-term care for this population.CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO: Com o envelhecimento populacional, houve alterações no perfil epidemiológico, com o predomínio atual das doenças crônico-degenerativas que, quando não tratadas, levam à perda da capacidade funcional e exigem assistência de longo prazo. OBJETIVOS: Descrever o perfil do idoso atendido no serviço de fisioterapia geriátrica e identificar fatore...

Slower heart rate and oxygen consumption kinetic responses in the on- and off-transient during a discontinuous incremental exercise: effects of aging
BACKGROUND: The analysis of the kinetic responses of heart rate (HR) and oxygen consumption (VO2) are an important tool for the evaluation of exercise performance and health status. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of aging on the HR and VO2 kinetics during the rest-exercise transition (on-transient) and the exercise-recovery transition (off-transient), in addition to investigating the influence of exercise intensity (mild and moderate) on these variables. METHOD: A total of 14 young (23±3 years) and 14 elderly (70±4 years) healthy men performed an incremental exercise testing (ramp pr...

Do women with migraine have higher prevalence of temporomandibular disorders?
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), using the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (RDC/TMD) in women with episodic and chronic migraine (M and CM), as well as in asymptomatic women. METHOD: Sample consisted of 61 women, being 38 with M and 23 with CM, identified from a headache outpatient center; we also investigated 30 women without headaches for at least 3 months (women without headache group - WHG). Assessment of TMD was conducted by a physical therapist who was blind to the headache status. RESULTS: The prevalence of TMD, assessed through the RDC, was 33...

Physical activity in daily life in physically independent elderly participating in community-based exercise program
BACKGROUND: It is unclear whether participation in exercise programs specifically developed for elderly translates into a more active lifestyle. OBJECTIVES: To compare the objectively measured level of physical activity in daily life (PADL) between physically independent elderly who participate or do not participate in community-based exercise programs; and to evaluate which factors are associated with the higher level of PADL in these subjects. METHOD: 134 elderly participants in community-based exercise programs (PG) and 104 non-participants (NPG) had their level of PADL measured using pedometers during 7 days. Other mea...

Recruitment rate, feasibility and safety of power training in individuals with Parkinson's disease: a proof-of-concept study
CONCLUSIONS: The recruitment rate was low due to the subjects' difficulties with transportation and lack of interest. The high rates of adherence and attendance and the absence of adverse events suggest that power training is feasible and safe in PD.CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO: Sugeriu-se que treinamento de potência muscular deve ser implementado em programas de exercícios na doença de Parkinson (DP). Entretanto, há necessidade de se determinar a viabilidade e a segurança associadas ao treinamento de movimentos rápidos em tais indivíduos. OBJETIVOS: Determinar a taxa de recrutamento dos participantes; a taxa de presença nas...

Wrist electrogoniometry: are current mathematical correction procedures effective in reducing crosstalk in functional assessment?
BACKGROUND: The recording of human movement is an essential requirement for biomechanical, clinical, and occupational analysis, allowing assessment of postural variation, occupational risks, and preventive programs in physical therapy and rehabilitation. The flexible electrogoniometer (EGM), considered a reliable and accurate device, is used for dynamic recordings of different joints. Despite these advantages, the EGM is susceptible to measurement errors, known as crosstalk. There are two known types of crosstalk: crosstalk due to sensor rotation and inherent crosstalk. Correction procedures have been proposed to correct t...

METHOD: 51 community-dwelling elderly were evaluated (mean age of 73±6 years), being 29 men (56.7%) and 22 women (43.3%). We collect the following variables: sociodemographic characteristics, frailty phenotype, pulmonary function test and assessment of the respiratory muscles using an analog manometer. The statistical analysis was performed using the Kolmogorov and Smirnov tests, one-way ANOVA, Paired Student's t-test and Pearson correlation coefficient (p
