Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation as a bridge to decision or recovery: Medical and ethical dilemmas
Publication date: July 2013 Source:Personalized Medicine Universe, Volume 2 Author(s): Shigeki Tabata , James T. Diehl , Nicholas C. Cavarocchi , Hitoshi Hirose Extracorporeal life support has advanced from its humble beginnings over 3 decades ago, with the first description of its success in a patient with Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), going as far back as 1971. The indications for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy include refractory respiratory and/or cardiac failure, and ECMO is now being increasingly used in adult patients. In this case report, we present a patient who had travele...

High dose IV vitamin C for treatment of prostate adenocarcinoma
We report here a case study of a patient who has diagnosed prostate cancer of Gleason's pattern 7. We found that, at the end of ten months of treatment with high dose IV vitamin C, the vascular tumor that was present before on the left mid-gland area of the prostate was no longer detectable on the ultrasound. In the light of the recent evidence showing anti-tumor activity of vitamin C, the role of high dose IV vitamin C for cancer should be considered further. (Source: Personalized Medicine Universe)

Detection of aberrant methylation of tumor suppressor genes in plasma from cancer patients
Conclusion Our results indicate that the frequency of methylation of cancer-related genes is dependent on the type of cancer and patient. Therefore, DNA methylation of cancer-related genes has a high potential as a biomarker for personalized medicine. (Source: Personalized Medicine Universe)

Use of diagnostic and therapeutic biomarkers in personalized oncology based on adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma research
Publication date: July 2013 Source:Personalized Medicine Universe, Volume 2 Author(s): Hiroo Hasegawa , Shimeru Kamihira Human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1) infection is linked to a spectrum of diverse diseases, including adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) and the chronic neuromyelopathy tropical spastic paraparesis or HTLV-1 associated myelopathy (TSP/HAM). ATLL is a neoplasm of mature CD4+ T-cell origin known to be resistant to standard anti-cancer therapies. Based on ATLL research performed in our laboratory as well as other reports, we discuss diagnostic, predictive, and pharmacological biomarkers for c...
