Comparison of Results of 4 Methods of Surgery in Grade 1 Lumbosacral Spondylolisthesis
Conclusions: After a 12-month follow-up, the 3 procedures of TLIF, PLIF, and posterior fusion pedicle screw did not show any difference in functional improvement of the patients, degree of fusion, and complications significantly, whereas all of them had a significant preference rather than the fourth group, in which no instrumentation and fusion was applied. An Investigation of Weather Factors Effect on Bell’s Palsy by Comparison With 2 Capital Cities in China
Aim: To evaluate the temperature change (one of the key weather factors) is relevant to Bell’s palsy (BP) occurrence and what kind of role does temperature change play in causing BP, via BP occurrence comparison of 2 capital cities. Materials and Methods: The epidemiological study of BP was conducted between the capital city of Liaoning Province, Shenyang (population: about 7.5 million in 2007 and 2008, climate type: temperate continental monsoon climate) and the capital city of Shanxi Province, Xi’an (population: about 6.5million in 2007 and 2008, climate type: warm sub-humid continental monsoon climate) in Table 1. ...

Central Nervous System Hydatid Disease: Clinical Analysis of 99 Cases in Qaem Hospital of Mashad University of Medical Sciences, Iran
Conclusions: Hydatid disease should be considered in the differential diagnosis of intracranial space-occupying lesions in developing countries where there are still lots of rural areas and the quality of life is not good. Early diagnosis of cerebral hydatid cysts may prevent serious life-threatening complications of this disease. Outcome is favorable when the cyst is completely removed without rupture. A Unilateral Subfrontal Basal Interhemispheric Approach to Large Craniopharyngiomas
Conclusions: The present results suggest that the unilateral subfrontal basal interhemispheric approach provides direct and wide exposure of large craniopharyngiomas. Anatomic preservation of the pituitary stalk, hypothalamic structure, perforating vessels, anterior communicating complex, the visual pathway, and the olfactory nerves is often possible. A Fatal Strike By an Inverted Cerebral Perfusion Pressure
This is the first documented case of a most extremely high intracranial pressure recorded by now and an inverted cerebral perfusion pressure at the time of an aneurysm rupture. This case illustrates the challenges of managing patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and the proposes that inverted cerebral perfusion pressure may be a fatal signal for the prognosis. Combination of Surgery and Gamma Knife in the Management of En Plaque Meningioma
Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the results of using gamma knife in resection of en plaque meningioma after subtotal surgery resection. Materials and Methods: All patients with en plaque meningioma in spheno-orbital area, who were subject to this experiment in the Neurosurgery Clinic of Shahid Rajai Hospital (affiliated to Qazvin University of Medical Sciences, Qazvin, Iran), were operated for tumor resection. Gamma knife was used to resect the tumor tissue in patients who underwent subtotal surgery resection. Patients were followed up for recurrence. Results: Of the 22 patients with average age of 53.82Â...

Recurrent Episodes of Asystolia Induced by Carotid Sinus Manipulation During Cervical Spine Surgery Without Preceding Clinical Symptoms
We report a unique case of recurrent asystolic episodes arising from carotid sinus hypersensitivity (CSH), during surgical intervention for cervical disk prolapse under general anesthesia. As the patient’s neck was positioned for optimal surgical exposure, an incidence of cardiac arrest lasting 5.8 seconds was detected that was restored to normal sinus rhythm by cessation of any manipulation in the neck and intravenous administration of atropine 0.5 mg. The incidence recurred twice and it was again elicited from light manipulations at the right side of the neck, where the surgical procedure was going to be performed. An ...

Intramedullary Metastasis of Breast Carcinoma
Intramedullary spinal cord metastasis is the rarest type of central nervous system involvement from breast cancer. Only a few cases have been reported in the literature. Most commonly, it is a late manifestation of the disease and survival after the diagnosis of intramedullary metastasis is unfortunately not good. Herein, we present a case with no metastasis other than the neuroaxis, relatively newly diagnosed, an aggressive inflammatory infiltrative intraductal carcinoma, having multiple metastatic intramedullary masses and leptomeningeal involvement. Incomplete Cord Injury by Minor Trauma in C1 Osteochondroma: A Case Report
Cervical osteochondroma is a rare tumor. However, because minor trauma in patients with a history of cervical osteochondroma can lead to serious neurological damage, spinal evaluation using computed tomography in hereditary multiple exostosis patients including patients with no presenting symptoms is required; in addition, sufficient explanation of the possibility of neurological damage after minor trauma to the head should be given to the patient and guardians. Massive, Spontaneous, Subcutaneous Hematoma Associated With Neurofibromatosis in the Lower Back
The purpose of this study is to report a case of massive, spontaneous, subcutaneous hematoma in a neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) patient. NF is rarely associated with spontaneous hemorrhage. Massive, spontaneous, subcutaneous hemorrhage in the lower back is also rare. Patients with NF1 should understand the potential complications of their disease and surgeons and physicians should be prepared to promptly manage such complications in these patients. The Effects of Octreotide Acetate on Spinal Cord Ischemia/Reperfusion Injury
In this study, we investigate the possible neuroprotective effects of a strong antioxidant, free radical scavenger; octreotide acetate on a rabbit spinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury model. A total of 18 rabbits were divided into 3 groups of 6 rabbits each, as follows: group 1 (n=6) sham, laparotomy only; group 2 (n=6) I/R group; group 3 (n=6) I/R+ octreotide group. I/R was established in groups 2 and 3. All rabbits were followed up neurologically for 24 hours. After 24 hours, the rabbits were killed and spinal cord tissue samples examined. Neurological examinations score, tissue malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione per...

Unilateral Subfrontal Approach for Anterior Communicating Artery Aneurysms: A Surgical Series of 42 Patients
Conclusions: This approach provides enough space for aneurysm manipulation with less brain retraction than conventional approaches and has obtained favorable outcome. We believe that this is one of the simple, less-invasive, and effective methods for surgical treatment of AcomA aneurysm. (Source: Neurosurgery Quarterly)

Management of Intracranial Arteriovenous Malformations (AVMs) at a Tertiary Center
Objective: Treatment of arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) remains a challenge in the neurosurgical entity. Our study aimed to review the procedures outcomes and complications of different strategies. Clinical Materials and Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 304 patients with AVMs treated with various combinations of radiosurgery (RS), surgery, and endovascular techniques between December 2010 and July 2012. Their presentation, preoperative neurological status, and postoperative outcome were analyzed. Results: During the study period, there were 65.1% male and 34.9% female patients. Mean age was 33.31 years, ranging from...
