Mental health, serum biomarkers and survival in severe COPD: a pilot study
Conclusion In this pilot study different dimensions of mental health were correlated to serum biomarkers, probably reflecting systemic effects of COPD. While leucocyte number and PHQ-stress were associated with long-term survival in univariate analyses, PHQ-stress remained in multivariate analyses as independent prognostic factor. DNA damage and cellular abnormalities in tuberculosis, lung cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
Conclusion COPD patients showed cellular abnormalities that corresponded to cell death by apoptosis and necrosis, while patients with TB presented defects in cytokinesis and dysfunctions in DNA repair that resulted in the formation of micronucleus (MN) besides apoptotic and necrotic cells. Concept review of dry powder inhalers: correct interpretation of published data
Abstract Dry powder inhalers (DPIs) are widely used in the clinical practice for delivering therapeutics to patients with lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. An overview of current DPIs available on the market from high resistance to low resistance has been reported in a recent review article. Supplemental oxygen users with pulmonary fibrosis perceive greater dyspnea than oxygen non-users

Weaning from tracheostomy in subjects undergoing pulmonary rehabilitation

Association between inflammatory airway disease of horses and exposure to respiratory viruses: a case control study
Conclusions IAD remains a persistent problem in the equine population and has strong similarities to the human disease, asthma, for which viral infection is an important trigger. The association between viral respiratory infection and development or exacerbation of IAD in this study suggests that viral infection may contribute to IAD susceptibility; there is, therefore, merit in further investigation into the relationship between respiratory virus exposure and development of IAD. Anti-RSV prophylaxis efficacy for infants and young children with cystic fibrosis in Ireland
Conclusions This study, the first of its kind from Ireland where CF prevalence is highest, does not provide unequivocal support for prophylactic use of palivizumab in CF patients under 2 years. Despite being derived from a small sample size, based on these data and complementary clinical observation, we have discontinued such prophylaxis. However, should reported incidence of RSV-related hospitalisation increase, there is scientific plausibility for appropriately powered, randomised, controlled trials of palivizumab. Venous thromboembolism and lung cancer: a review
Abstract Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a common complication of malignancies and epidemiological studies suggest that lung cancer belonged to the group of malignancies with the highest incidence rates of VTE. Association of vitamin D receptor gene polymorphisms and vitamin D levels with asthma and atopy in Cypriot adolescents: a case–control study
