A proposal for a tailored approach to diverting ostomy for colorectal anastomosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Both methods have advantages and disadvantages. Loop transverse colostomy could be the preferred technique for older patients to avoid electrolyte disorder and renal insufficiency. Further prospective trials with documentation of electrolyte metabolism and quality of life should follow. PMID: 29154517 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Chirurgica)

Current treatments for anal condylomata acuminata.
CONCLUSIONS: No specific antiviral treatment is available and no consensus has been reached on the appropriate treatment for anogenital warts. No data are available to indicate whether treatment eliminates infectivity, the primary aim of treatment being to remove the lesions. There is a paucity of published randomized trials. Despite the introduction of antiviral treatments such as interferon or imiquimod, surgical destruction or removal remains the treatment of choice. Colitis-associated colorectal cancer in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Authors: Baek SJ, Kim SH Abstract Colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CACRC) is a major concern in patients with long-standing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). CACRC can develop under the influence of several risk factors including longer duration and disease extent and shows clinical and molecular features different from those of sporadic CRC. Several academic societies have recommended surveillance guidelines for CACRC that develops in IBD patients. Patients are stratified according to risk for CRC and differentiated by surveillance colonoscopy and management. In the current article, we review CACRC i...

Deregulated HOXB7 expression predicts poor prognosis of patients with malignancies of digestive system.
CONCLUSIONS: High expression of HOXB7 protein was associated with poor prognosis of patients with digestive system cancers, as well as clinicopathologic characteristics, including the tumor invasion, lymph node status, distant metastasis and TNM stage. The expression of HOXB7 protein was not associated with age, gender or levels of differentiation. HOXB7 protein expression level in tumor tissue might serve as a novel prognostic marker for digestive system cancers. PMID: 28749115 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: Minerva Chirurgica)

Roux-en-Y gastric bypass versus sleeve gastrectomy: a narrative review of risks and benefits.
CONCLUSIONS: A review of moderate and long-term studies directly comparing SG and GB suggests a greater degree of weight loss with GB. There is some but limited evidence the GB is more likely to induce DM remission, while increasing the risk of specific micronutrient deficiencies. Considerations in minimally invasive adrenal surgery; the front- or the backdoor?
Authors: Vrielink OM, Hemmer PH, Kruijff S Abstract In the last decades, in minimally invasive adrenal surgery, the retroperitoneoscopic adrenalectomy (PRA) has shown favorable results when compared to the laparoscopic transperitoneal adrenalectomy (LTA). However, for many endocrine surgeons it is unclear if, when, and how to transition from LTA to PRA. Although the length of the learning curve for both approaches is comparable, the LTA is a technically more challenging procedure whilst PRA demands an orientation in a new environment in a patient that is positioned upside down. Visiting a proctor is crucia...
