The coronary resorbable magnesium scaffold Magmaris: what we've learnt (so far...).
Authors: Bennett J, McCutcheon K Abstract Bioresorbable scaffold (BRS) technology provides transient vessel support with drug-delivery capability without the long-term limitations of the permanent metallic drug-eluting stents (DES). Numerous scaffolds have been developed and investigated by device manufacturers, many of which, due to device deficiencies, have fallen by the way side. This short review will focus on the resorbable magnesium scaffold "Magmaris", the only metallic bioresorbable scaffold currently available, providing an evaluation of the most up to date clinical data whilst also briefly highli...

Endothelial damage inhibitors for improvement of saphenous vein graft patency in coronary artery bypass grafting: current evidence, clinical challenges and future directions.
Authors: Sandner S, Pachuk CJ, Aschacher T, Milojevic M, Caliskan E, Emmert MY Abstract The saphenous vein graft (SVG) remains the most commonly used conduit in coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). In light of this further research must be aimed at the development of strategies to optimize SVG patency and thereby improve both short- and long-term outcomes of CABG surgery. SVG patency in large part depends on the protection of the structural and functional integrity of the vascular endothelium at the time of conduit harvesting, including optimal storage conditions to prevent endothelial damage. This revi...

Impact of extracorporeal shockwave myocardial revascularization on the ischemic burden of refractory angina patients: a single photon emission computed tomography study.
CONCLUSIONS: In this single-center cohort of RA patients undergoing ESMR treatment and serial myocardial perfusion imaging, ESMR was associated with a significant reduction in the ischemic burden. These findings provide a physiological rationale and mechanism for the observed clinical benefit. Comprehensive network analysis to identify the molecular pathogenesis of pulmonary hypertension.
CONCLUSIONS: It is necessary to identify disease-related disorders by integrating multiple regulatory factors. The regulatory network may play an important role in PAH. The results not only provided new methods and ideas for follow-up research, but also helps researchers to have a deeper understanding of potential pathogenesis for PAH. Thoracic aortic surgery: status and upcoming novelties.
Authors: Spadaccio C, Hu H, Li C, Qiao Z, Ge Y, Tie Z, Zhu J, Moon M, Danton M, Sun L, Gaudino MF Abstract Several novel technological developments and surgical approaches have characterized the field of aortic surgery in the recent decade. The progressive introduction of endovascular procedure, minimally invasive surgical techniques and hybrid approaches have changed the practice in aortic surgery and generated new trends and questions. Also, the advancements in the manufacturing of tissue engineered vascular grafts as substitutes for aortic replacements are enlightening new avenues in the treatment of ao...

Balloon catheters and stents with paclitaxel: are they really dangerous? A review and update.
Authors: Stanek F Abstract The aim of this review is to summarize and update current research concerning the safety of drug-coated balloons (DCBs) and drug-eluting stents (DESs) with paclitaxel (PTX) in peripheral arteries. The data from the large randomized controlled trials showed evidence of the superiority of DCBs over plain balloon angioplasty concerning efficacy. Also, the safety parameters between the two groups did not differ. However, two meta-analyses identifying an increased late mortality risk after using PTX technologies were published only a short time ago (Katsanos et al, FDA meta-analysis)....

MedShr: improving patient care through clinical case discussion.
Authors: Coles RA, Goh SJ, Livingstone D, Qasim A Abstract Case discussion is an essential part of clinical practice and medical education, and as part of patient care takes place both informally between medical staff and formally in case conferences and other meetings. Case presentations are often the most popular sessions at medical congresses and increasingly have moved to digital channels and social media. MedShr was developed to help doctors improve patient care: to empower doctors to use their own smartphones to share and discuss clinical cases, whilst protecting patient privacy and confidentiality. ...
