Relationship between diabetes mellitus and heart rate variability in community-dwelling elders
Conclusions There is a difference between the studied groups principally in what concerns the time domain, which reflects the parasympathetic activity, suggesting that elders with diabetes mellitus may have a worse parasympathetic control. (Source: Medicina)

Genetic variations of MTHFR gene and their association with preterm-birth in Korean women
Conclusions Our findings suggested that the MTHFR gene 677 C/T and 1298 A/C polymorphisms might have protective effects for preterm-birth in the Korean women. (Source: Medicina)

Characteristics of headache in relation to the manifestation of Susac syndrome
Publication date: Available online 3 February 2018 Source:Medicina Author(s): Diana Obelienienė, Raminta Macaitytė, Renata Balnytė, Rūta Pėstininkaitė, Rymantė Gleiznienė, Jūratė Balčiūnienė Susac syndrome is characterized by a clinical triad of encephalopathy, branch retinal artery occlusion, and hearing loss. Due to the absence of the whole complex of the triad in the majority of cases at disease presentation, the syndrome often remains underdiagnosed and untreated. Headache is estimated to affect up to 80% of Susac syndrome patients, but the relevance of headache characteristics and profile is not y...

Anterior capsulorhexis opening reduction after cataract surgery with subluxated lenses
Conclusions A weak or partially absent zonule does not markedly affect the reduction of the anterior capsule opening if appropriate surgical techniques, support materials and IOLs are used, even in the presence of a small initial capsulorhexis opening area. Therefore, a cataract surgery approach on the subluxated lens should be used. Ocular comorbidities, particularly PEX syndrome, play more significant roles in ACO reduction, and appropriate ACO size reducing inhibitors (e.g., anterior laser capsulotomy) or other types of surgery should be used. Rat spinal ganglia in assessment of protective action of antioxidants: A morphological study
Conclusions Morphological data show that unithiolum and thiotriazolinum action decreases toxic effects of mercury chloride and are similar. They demonstrate pronounced activation of synthetic processes in sensory neurons and satellite cells of spinal ganglia. Mildronate also restores cell ultrastructure and has more pronounced effect on their energetic processes and interaction between neurons and satellite cells. (Source: Medicina)

Gender differences in residual effect of prior drop jumps on oxygen uptake during heavy cycling exercise
Conclusions Prior eccentric-–concentric exercise of thigh muscles (100 drop jumps) accelerates VO2 kinetics at the start and increases VO22 kinetics at the start and increases VO2 during steady state of heavy cycling only in the male group. So, prior exercise of such type has a higher negative impact on cycling economy in men than in women and this might be related to greater muscle damage and fatigue in physically active male persons after plyometric exercise. The clinical significance of endocardial endothelial dysfunction
Publication date: Available online 21 September 2017 Source:Medicina Author(s): Sonja Smiljić Endocardial endothelium (EE) is essential in the embryonic development of the heart, the optimal contractility and rhythm as well as the remodeling of the heart. Endocardial endothelium affect the contractility of cardiomyocytes through paracrine signaling substances such as nitric oxide (NO), endothelin (ET-1), prostaglandins (PGI2, PGF2, PGE2) and angiotensin II (ANG II). Typical lesions of endocardial endothelium have been described in atrial fibrillation, ischemia/reperfusion injury, cardiac hypertrophy, heart failure, sep...

Relations between longitudinal trajectories of subjective financial wellbeing with self-rated health among elderly
Conclusions Results suggest that in late life longitudinal negative changes in perceptions of financial wellbeing may occur together with decreases levels of self-reported health. Future research on health inequalities in elderly should pay specific attention to the link between financial wellbeing and health from a self-reported perspective. (Source: Medicina)

Evaluation of clinical teaching quality in competency-based residency training in Lithuania
Conclusion Resident evaluations of clinical teachers are influenced by teachers’ age, gender, year of residency training, type of teachers’ academic position and whether or not clinical teacher performed self-evaluation. Development of CBME should be focused on the continuous evaluation of quality, clinical teachers educational support and the implementation of e-portfolio. (Source: Medicina)

Morphometric parameters of the optic disc in normal and glaucomatous eyes based on time-domain optical coherence tomography image analysis
Conclusions Informative results with regard to the size and shape due to various ocular characteristics between the healthy control group and patients suffering with primary open angle glaucoma were obtained. Both study groups were significant in size, which makes the findings interesting and important contribution in the field. (Source: Medicina)

Functional and biochemical adaptations of elite level futsal players from Brazil along a training season
Conclusions The tapering strategy was successful considering players presented lower levels of muscle damage, inflammation and oxidative stress makers before T2, which preceded the main championship of the year. These results are of great relevance, considering the team won the FIFA®-Intercontinental-Futsal-Cup, which happened at T2. Thus, it seems that routine-based biochemical markers may be useful as training control means in this population. (Source: Medicina)
