An evaluation of the effectiveness and safety of midazolam in children undergoing dental surgery
Conclusions Oral midazolam, at a single dose from 0.2 to 0.6mg/kg, is effective and safe, and provides the expected sedative effects in children required by premedication for dental surgery. (Source: Medicina)

Comparison of body composition, nutritional status, functional status, and quality of life between osteoporotic and osteopenic postmenopausal women
Conclusions We found lower FTM and LTM values and a poorer nutritional status in osteoporotic patients than in osteopenic ones. Nutritional status was correlated with body composition and BMD, and functional status was correlated with age and BMD. (Source: Medicina)

Impact of etiology on course and outcomes of severe acute pancreatitis
Conclusions We defined a trend toward decreased incidence of infected necrosis in larger volume (≥30%) pancreatic necrosis, absence of abdominal compartment syndrome, lower rate of necrosectomies, shorter in-hospital stay, and an insignificantly reduced mortality rate in biliary SAP patients, indicating more favorable course of biliary SAP. Increased innate and adaptive immune responses in induced sputum of young smokers
Conclusions This study demonstrates that young smokers have early inflammatory changes in their airways that not only initiate nonspecific mechanisms recruiting neutrophils, but also involve specific immune mechanisms with recruitment of T regulatory lymphocytes. The lymphocyte response is probably adaptive. (Source: Medicina)

Association of cardio-ankle vascular index with cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular events in metabolic syndrome patients
Conclusions In the middle-aged MS patients, higher CAVI was associated with altered lipid and glucose metabolism, older age, greater heart rate and mean arterial pressure, and worse cardiovascular outcome. (Source: Medicina)

Long-term follow-up of children with typical hemolytic uremic syndrome
Conclusions At 10 years after the acute phase of typical HUS in children, the prevalence of hypertension and proteinuria at 1- and 5-year follow-ups decreased, but after 10 years it started to increase. As much as 6.1% of the children developed hypertension or proteinuria for the first time at 10 years. Hypertension was documented more frequently in children who were younger than <1 year at the onset of the disease. Renal dysfunction after 5 and 10 years remained in more than one-third of cases, and it was observed more often if hypertension was documented at the acute period. (Source: Medicina)

Molecular alterations in signal pathways of melanoma and new personalized treatment strategies: Targeting of Notch
This article discusses mutated genes and leading aberrant signal pathways in human melanoma which are of interest concerning to their perspective for personalized treatment strategies in melanoma. We speculate that E3 ubiquitin ligases MDM2 and MDM4 can be attractive therapeutic target for p53 and Notch signaling pathways in malignant melanoma by using small molecule inhibitors. It is possible that restoration of p53-MDM2-NUMB complexes in melanoma can restore wild type p53 function and positively modulate Notch pathway. In this review we summarize recent data about novel US Food and Drug Administration approved target dru...

Temperature influencing permeation pattern of alfuzosin: An investigation using DoE
Conclusion The method reported here is a simple and useful tool for studying the effect of heat on percutaneous absorption. Such temperature dependent enhancement of flux can be more pronounced at skin surface temperatures >45°C. (Source: Medicina)

Body physique and dominant somatotype in elite and low-profile athletes with different specializations
Conclusions Morphometric characteristics of the athlete's body and the fractional somatotype can be used as guiders and markers of the chosen sport and method of training. The results emphasize the necessity for a specific somatotype to reach a high profile in the selected area of sport and thus support morphometric oriented studies. Further studies could elucidate differentiation by age and sex. (Source: Medicina)

Management of coronary artery disease patients in Latvia compared with practice in Central-Eastern Europe and globally: Analysis of the CLARIFY registry
Conclusions Latvian CAD patients are well managed in terms of aspirin use and frequency of percutaneous coronary intervention. Control of obesity and high BP is poorer and needs further improvement. (Source: Medicina)

Impact of left ventricular function on health-related quality of life in coronary artery disease patients
Conclusions In stable CAD patients with NYHA I-II functional class HRQoL was not strongly associated with left ventricular function; in NYHA III functional class patients’ greater systolic function mainly was associated with better physical health and better diastolic function, with better mental health. Oral bony outgrowths: Prevalence and genetic factor influence. Study of twins
Conclusion The most common bony outgrowth was torus mandibularis. Our results show that the genetic factor is dominant in the etiology of oral bony outgrowths. (Source: Medicina)

Prevalence and etiology of midfacial fractures: A study of 799 cases
Conclusions This study revealed that the main cause of midfacial fractures was assault. Male patients, aged 15–34 years, more often sustain midfacial fractures. Preventive health care programs should seek measures in the reduction of aggression and violence in close future involving family, school and community institutions. (Source: Medicina)

Comparison of the improvement in myocardial perfusion and function in cases of rapid and slow electrocardiographic stage dynamics between patients with TIMI-3 flow after primary angioplasty for acute myocardial infarction
Conclusions There was not any change in myocardial perfusion and function in a case of slow change of ECG stages after reached post-PCI TIMI flow grade 3, while myocardial perfusion improved and function tended to improve in a case of the rate at least two ECG stages in 2 days after primary angioplasty for acute MI.
