Maxillary bone characteristics between thick and thin gingival biotypes with dentoalveolar protrusion
ConclusionPatients with anterior dentoalveolar protrusion presented with either thick or thin gingival biotypes. The thick gingival biotype showed more favorable alveolar bone characteristics than the thin gingival biotype as far as orthodontic treatment is concerned. Biphasic sutural response is key to palatal expansion
ConclusionTransverse force stimulates two distinct phases in the mid-palatal suture. An early catabolic phase, characterized by inflammation, osteoclast recruitment, and activity, results in bone resorption and sutural widening. Then osteoclasts activate osteoblasts resulting in an anabolic phase, during which the integrity of the skeleton is reestablished. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

Oral appliances for obstructive sleep apnea
Conclusion and RelevanceCustom-made and titratable OAs are indicated for adult OSA patients who do not tolerate or who are not good candidates for CPAP. A multidisciplinary approach allows to establish the least possible amount of mandibular advancement while achieving the highest reduction of OSA severity, thus optimizing the treatment effectiveness, reducing the occurrence of side effects and decreasing the risk of treatment discontinuation. Rotational effects of Class II Division 1 treatment with the Herbst appliance and fixed appliances in growing subjects with different vertical patterns
ConclusionThe results support previous reports that combined Herbst and fixed appliance treatment is likely to be associated with considerable Class II dental correction in many cases. Although there is likely to be a wide range of individual response to the use of the Herbst appliance, it is unlikely that such overall treatment will be associated with clinically significant forward mandibular rotation in dolichofacial subjects. Orthodontic retention procedures in New Zealand: A survey to benefit clinical practice guideline development
ConclusionsA trend toward more dual retention instead of solitary removable or solitary fixed retention, more vacuum-formed retainers instead of Hawley-type retainers and more life-long retention instead of retention for a definite period of time has been demonstrated. For all dental professionals in New Zealand and worldwide, it is necessary to be familiar with unintentionally active retainers and be able to identify them. This can prevent the worsening of inadvertent tooth movements. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

Changes in orthodontic occlusal indices after semi-rapid maxillary expansion
ConclusionThe study suggests that there is a significant decrease in orthodontic treatment need and treatment complexity after semi-rapid maxillary expansion treatment. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

Assessing accelerated tooth movement techniques on their own catabolic merits: a review
ConclusionsData from bone biomarkers TRAP and TNFα clearly showed differences between TM-O and TM-A, but the differences were not enough to discriminate catabolic bone activity among the acceleration techniques corticotomy, micro-osteoperforation, and corticision. Determination of the duration of various pubertal growth stages in Indonesian boys and girls using hand-wrist radiographs
ConclusionIt is suggested that functional appliance directed toward growth modification should be initiated in girls much earlier than what is now outlined in the literature to gain its full potential. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

Clinical and molecular-level comparison between conventional and corticotomy-assisted canine retraction techniques
ConclusionsIt was concluded that alveolar corticotomy increased rate of canine retraction by approximately 40%, increased catabolic activities approximately 250%, and increased anabolic activities approximately 42%. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)
