Esthetic perception of facial profile contour in patients with different facial profiles
ConclusionsAll groups shared similar perception. The most and least attractive profiles were the normal and extremely concave profiles, respectively. Slightly convex profiles were recognized as attractive as normal profiles, whereas slightly concave and extremely convex profiles were equally unattractive. Patient perceptions and oral impacts following labial and lingual biocreative therapy: A randomized clinical trial
ConclusionsOral impacts are commonly experienced during both labial and lingual biocreative therapies. No statistically significant differences were found between the two groups regarding functional limitation, physical pain, and adverse effects on quality of life. Patients treated with labial biocreative therapy were more annoyed by the appearance of the appliance and were more likely to be embarrassed compared with those treated by the lingual biocreative technique. Both groups had similar levels of treatment satisfaction. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

Long-term evaluation of metal ion release in orthodontic patients using fluoridated oral hygiene agents: An in vivo study
ConclusionsArchwires are susceptible to corrosion when exposed to fluoride agents during orthodontic therapy causing release of metal ions into the mouth with the possibility of systemic absorption. Long-term consequences of metal ion release into the oral cavity require further investigation. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

Evaluation and comparison of bracket slot dimensions in lingual bracket systems: An in vitro study
ConclusionsActual slot size and shape of commercially available brackets are larger or smaller from the actual prescribed value within a bracket series. Slot geometry and the standard of bracket finish varies between the brackets of different groups. Clinicians should be aware that there may be a three-dimensional loss of tooth positioning as a result of the inadvertent use of orthodontic brackets with oversized slots prolonging treatment duration and the need of additional wire bending to overcome the inadequacies of the brackets so as to achieve a good finishing. Vertical characteristics of posterior teeth in untreated malocclusions
ConclusionsThis study suggests that posterior dentoalveolar characteristics differ among the established malocclusions. There is likely an interplay between tooth eruption and vertical growth of the jaws. One factor can influence the severity of another, as the dentition and skeleton develop simultaneously. Clinical treatment approaches to minimize divergence from the normal skeletal pattern can be established for growing patients. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

Retention protocols and use of vacuum-formed retainers among specialist orthodontists in India
ConclusionRemovable and fixed retainers are currently the main preferences of retainers. VFR as the esthetic alternative will replace other retainers in the future provided problems with its usage are resolved. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

3D-CT assessment of mandibular widths in young subjects with different underlying vertical facial patterns
ConclusionsDolichofacials are likely to have relatively smaller masseter cross-sectional areas and volumes than brachyfacials, and vice versa. There is likely to be a close association between mandibular intermolar width and the corresponding widths at the apical and lower border levels. There is not likely to be the same association between the intercanine width and the corresponding lower border width. Brachyfacials are likely to have a greater width of buccal cancellous bone through which the canines can potentially be expanded laterally. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

Perception of facial profile changes after treatment with Forsus fatigue-resistant device in Class II patients
ConclusionsOrthodontic treatment performed with the Forsus fatigue resistance device combined with fixed orthodontics had a positive outcome according to orthodontists and patients. The better attractive profile rates scored by patients may suggest a higher acceptance of the Class II facial characteristics. These data may guide orthodontists to discuss the treatment goals with patients considering their expectations and esthetic perceptions. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

Can cephalometric parameters be measured reproducibly using reduced-dose cone-beam computed tomography?
ConclusionOrthodontists could image with CBCT using a 180° arc of rotation, 2.5 mA, and 70 or 80 kV to reduce radiation dose while yielding images of adequate quality that are derived from three-dimensional data. (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)

Use of the WALA ridge to evaluate mandibular molar inclination measured to American Board of Orthodontics standards
ConclusionsMandibular molars with vertical differences in buccal and lingual cusp heights meeting the ABO standards for inclination have significantly smaller horizontal tooth to mandibular bone distances (WALA-FA). (Source: Journal of the World Federation of Orthodontists)
