Nerves in the cavernous tissue of the glans penis: An immunohistochemical study using elderly donated cadavers
DiscussionHistological examination revealed a neurovascular bundle that penetrated the glans cavernous tissue toward the skin covering, with a rich nerve supply to the skin folds at and near the coronal sulcus. (Source: Journal of the Anatomical Society of India)

Effect of loading on occurrence of vertebral body changes in field hockey players
DiscussionOur data suggest that the mechanical loading on lower spine plays an important role in the development of degenerative changes of the vertebral body, which may be considered a risk factor for future injury and low back pain in hockey players. Histological changes of myocardium in dilated cardiomyopathy
DiscussionDilated cardiomyopathy leads to heart failure which can cause death. So, it is important to know the changes occurring in a heart due to dilated cardiomyopathy for the prognosis and further treatment for the disease. The finding ranges from minimal change to many other variation in the myocytes which is discussed further. (Source: Journal of the Anatomical Society of India)

A study of the extensor tendons of the hand from point of view of evolution
DiscussionPresent study attempted to explain the presence of these extra muscles on the basis of their actions. Increased supination and pronation movements have been associated with more number of muscles/tendons in the extensor carpi radialis muscle and could explain the formation of extensor carpi radialis tertius muscle observed in the present study. The need to extend wrist and throw an object in a precise direction which was the need of the primate evolving to be the human being, could explain the extra extensors seen over the wrist and digits. A very well developed extensor mechanism is needed for precise functionin...

Determination of the anatomic factors that affect the pain values in LDH diagnosed patients
In this study to find the cause of the pain, the anatomical alterations of patients without spinal stenosis were examined through MRI retrospectively.MethodsSeventy people with lumbar pain and seventy people who were diagnosed with L4-L5 lumbar disc hernia without spinal stenosis were selected respectively as the control group and the patient group. The maximum anterior-posterior hernia length and hernia width and spinal canal’s sagittal-transverse diameters were measured on the T2-weighted axial and sagittal magnetic resonance images.ResultsThe measured visual analog scale (VAS) values were compared between genders and ...

Anatomical study of the Foramen Venosum and its clinical implications
We examined 178 macerated skulls belonging to individuals of both sexes, black and white. Bilateral or unilateral presence of FV was analysed. The FV-FO and FV-FS distances were measured with a digital caliper. Statistical analysis was done using chi-squared and Student's t tests.ResultsFV was found in 32.02% of the sample. In 23.6% the FV presented bilaterally and in 8.42% unilaterally. FV was more prevalent in white males than in white females. The FV-FO distance was greater in white males than in white females and significantly greater in black females than in white females. There were racial and sexual differences in t...

Volumetric correlation between concha bullosa and paranasal sinuses
DiscussionThere was a positive correlation between concha bullosa and paranasal sinus volumes. Our results may helpful in understanding normal volumetric values of the paranasal sinuses and concha bullosa. The knowledge of presented data may be useful in clinical planning of medical or surgical interventions of the paranasal sinuses and concha bullosa. Morphometric study of Intratemporal course of facial nerve in relation to pneumatization of temporal bones—An original study
DiscussionThe distal segment of nerve is most commonly injured during otologic surgeries. Incus pointer can be considered as a landmark to identify the facial nerve. Accordingly the tympano mastoid part of the facial nerve can be divided into proximal, distal and stylomastoid foramen segments. Radiological evaluations such as Computed Tomographic (CT) imaging techniques and MRI techniques like FIESTA (Fast Imaging Employing Steady-state Acquisition) have become popular in identifying these segments. The morphometric values of facial nerve provided in the present study can help in assessment during procedures, like end to e...

Study of communication between musculocutaneous and median nerves in man
DiscussionThe incidence of communication between musculocutaneous and median nerve is quite high (42%). Previous studies carried out in different countries and ethnicities showed abnormal communication between these two nerves ranged from 6–68%.Lesions of communicating nerve may give rise to pattern of weakness that may impose difficulty in diagnosis. So it is important to have awareness of these variations that are observed and discussed in present study. (Source: Journal of the Anatomical Society of India)

The acromial morphology and its implication in impingement syndrome: An anatomical study
DiscussionOur study may suggest that in Indian population, 13.33% population is at risk of impingement syndrome according to the thickness of acromion. In addition, angles of acromion tilt and acromion slope are larger in Indian scapulae as compare to that of other countries. This knowledge would be useful for orthopaedic surgeons and radiologists.
