Health Promoting Lifestyle Among Israeli Adult Survivors of Childhood Cancer
Conclusions: Health behaviors associated with interpersonal relationships and spiritual growth were more likely to be performed compared to physical activity, good nutrition, and decreased smoking and alcohol consumption. Special attention should be placed on promoting physical activity and good nutrition among survivors of childhood cancer. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing)

Creating a Meeting Point of Understanding: Interpreters Experiences in Swedish Childhood Cancer Care
Discussion: Our result shows that in order to create a sustainable meeting point of understanding, it is necessary to explain both the context and cultural differences. These results suggest that the responsibility for information transfer lies with both the health care profession and the interpreters. Tools have to be developed for both parties to contribute to creating the meeting point of understanding. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing)

Geographic Variation in Mortality Among Children and Adolescents Diagnosed With Cancer in Tennessee: Does Race Matter?
Cancer is one of the leading causes of death among children in the United States. Previous research has examined geographic variation in cancer incidence and survival, but the geographic variation in mortality among children and adolescents is not as well understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate geographic variation by race in mortality among children and adolescents diagnosed with cancer in Tennessee. Using an innovative combination of spatial and nonspatial analysis techniques with data from the 2004-2011 Tennessee Cancer Registry, pediatric deaths were mapped and the effect of race on the proximity to ru...

Diffusion Tensor Imaging and Neurobehavioral Outcome in Children With Brain Tumors Treated With Chemotherapy
Conclusions. Brain injury, decreased QOL, and to a lesser extent, executive functioning deficits appear in CBTS treated with myeloablative chemotherapy and autologous hematopoietic progenitor cell rescue. Early cognitive and psychological assessment and intervention are warranted in this population. (Source: Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing)

Evaluation of the Utility of a Transition Workbook in Preparing Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors for Transition to Adult Services: A Pilot Study
Transition to adult care for adolescent and young adult survivors is challenging and is inclusive of several factors like knowledge and developmental, emotional, and social status of survivors and parents. This pilot study addressed the feasibility of a transition workbook, a method of preparing adolescent and young adults to transition to adult care. Using a mixed methods design, investigators also measured transition worry and readiness in 30 survivors. Support was provided throughout a 6-month period as survivors and parents completed the workbook. The workbook included sections about the treatment history of survivors,...

Utilization of an Intravenous Line Lifter Within a Pediatric Oncology Population
Young children with cancer often have central lines. When ambulating during an intravenous infusion, their tubing drags on the hospital floor resulting in contamination of the exterior of the tubing. The tubing can then contaminate the children’s linens, where central line procedures occur, increasing the risk of a central lineassociated blood stream infection. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the IV Line Lifter as a device to decrease contamination of the exterior of IV tubing. Baseline adenosine triphosphate bioluminescence testing was used on the exterior IV tubing to quantify organic matter as relative...

Experiences of Pediatric Oncology Patients and Their Parents at End of Life: A Systematic Review
Improvement in pediatric palliative and end-of-life care has been identified as an ongoing research priority. The child and parent experience provides valuable information to guide how health care professionals can improve the transition to end of life and the care provided to children and families during the vulnerable period. The purpose of this systematic review was to describe the experience of pediatric oncology patients and their parents during end of life, and identify gaps to be addressed with interventions. A literature search was completed using multiple databases, including CINAHL, PubMed, and PsycInfo. A total ...

Yoga for Children and Adolescents After Completing Cancer Treatment
Survivors of childhood cancer may experience persistent symptoms, including fatigue, sleep disturbance, and balance impairment. Yoga is a complementary therapy that improves fatigue, sleep, and quality of life in adult cancer survivors. Using a one group, repeated measures design, we evaluated the feasibility of a yoga program and assessed if cancer survivor participants ages 10 to 17 years (n = 13) had significantly less fatigue and anxiety, and better balance and sleep, after a 6-week yoga intervention compared with a 6-week pre-intervention wait period. Study recruitment was challenging with a 32% enrollment rate; yoga ...

Spirituality in Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer: A Review of Literature
Purpose: Spirituality and religion have been found to have a positive impact on adults with cancer, but these concepts have not been well examined in adolescents and young adults (AYA) with cancer. AYA often question and struggle with their religious and spiritual beliefs, so it is not clear if spirituality and religion have the same positive impact on this age group. The purpose of this review of literature was to examine the research that has been conducted in spirituality in AYA with cancer. Methods: The review covered the years from 1980 to present. The terms cancer, adolescents, and young adults as well as the phrases...

Psychosocial Strength Enhancing Resilience in Adolescents and Young Adults With Cancer
The purpose of this study was to explore ways of enhancing psychosocial strengths in newly diagnosed and relapsed adolescents and young adults (AYAs) to improve their resilience. A descriptive case study was used. The adolescent resilience model (ARM) and the self-sustaining process model were applied as theories. The data were analyzed using pattern-matching logic. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 18 patients aged 12 to 24 years and discharged within 10 years. We found that the newly diagnosed and the relapsing AYAs developed the 5 strength factors of the ARM during and after treatment. Whether the individual...

"Its not Just Camp!": Understanding the Meaning of Childrens Cancer Camps for Children and Families
The purpose of this philosophical hermeneutic inquiry was to understand the meaning of children’s cancer camps for the child with cancer and the family. Six childhood cancer families and 5 cancer camp counselors were interviewed, in order to bring understanding to this topic. Findings from this research revealed that camp means different things for different families, and that much is at play in the cancer camp experience: the healing and developmental power of play, finding acceptance and fit, grief as something to live with versus "get over," storytelling as a means of reshaping and understanding traumatic experien...

Screening for Distress in Young People After Treatment for Sarcoma: A Feasibility Study
Few validated tools are available in childhood cancers settings to assess distress and worry. Twenty-one young people (mean age = 14 years), with an average 4 years since diagnosis, attended a sarcoma follow-up clinic and were asked to complete questionnaires assessing general mood and behavior, quality of life, and distress. All young people completed the Distress Thermometer. However, as the age range was quite wide (9-18 years), different questionnaires were also used with different age groups to assess feasibility and acceptance. In addition, young people were asked for their views about the questionnaires they had com...

Body Image and the Female Adolescent Oncology Patient
This article will examine the complex concept of body image and discuss why female adolescent patients are at such high risk for negative body image. Assessment and care strategies are needed to foster a positive body image, resiliency, and overall well-being. Although survivorship studies may offer insightful information about the effects of the cancer journey on long-term body image, focus should be on prevention and holistic care as part of the treatment itself. The health care team, especially nursing professionals, should acknowledge, recognize, and address this vital issue as a critical part of oncology care. (Source...

The Information Needs of South African Parents of Children With Cancer
Information is an important need in order for parents to be empowered to face their child’s cancer condition. To explore the information needs of parents of children with cancer treated at an academic hospital in the Gauteng Province of South Africa, a descriptive phenomenological design was selected. The study setting was an academic hospital in Johannesburg and purposive sampling included 13 parents who spoke English and were willing to participate in the study. Qualitative interviews were conducted and thematic analyses were used to analyze the data. Four themes emerged from the data: the shock of the diagnosis, i...
