Imposed identities and limited opportunities: Advocacy agency staff perspectives on the construction of their clients with intellectual disabilities
Intellectual disability is commonly conceptualised as stigmatised identity; however, within the literature, the notion of a damaged identity is contested. The aim of this research was to explore the social construction of intellectual disability from the perspective of staff who work closely with people with intellectual disabilities. Informed by a contextualist perspective, this research was based on interviews with five staff members of an advocacy agency in a regional area of Australia. Causal layered analysis was used to deconstruct the interview data. Analysis of the interactions that emerged across the causal layers ...

An evaluation of a community living initiative in Ireland
This study explores the experiences of a group of adults with intellectual disabilities who moved from residential settings to living units in the community. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, it considers the significance of that move for them and seeks to understand the extent to which their lives have changed. Whereas it emerges that this was a positive period in their lives, it is clear that a number of issues remain to be addressed and these provide useful information for similar developments in the future. An attachment-focused parent-child intervention for biting behaviour in a child with intellectual disability: A clinical case study
This article explores one such case of a 13-year-old girl with moderate intellectual disability and severe and persistent externalizing behavioural difficulties – biting, in particular. Once the severity of the behaviour was formulated within the framework of attachment, a structured attachment-focused parent–child intervention was designed in order to repair the damaged attachment between mother and daughter as a way of addressing the problematic behaviour. Outcomes demonstrated a sustained – immediately, at 3- and 6-month follow-up – positive impact of the intervention not only on the presenting p...

What's in it for me? The meaning of involvement in a self-advocacy group for six people with intellectual disabilities
Conclusion: Being part of the group is central to the experience of self-esteem, self-development and empowerment. Responses allow the exploration of the interrelationship between individual, group and community. Consideration is given to models of disability and the evidence base in relation to personal and political outcomes of self-advocacy. Links are made with developing a sense of self, self-determination, interpersonal learning and building resilience. Implications for practice are discussed. Negotiating parenthood: Experiences of economic hardship among parents with cognitive difficulties
People with cognitive difficulties often have scarce economic resources, and parents with cognitive difficulties are no exception. In this article, parents’ experiences are put forth and discussed, for example, how does economic hardship affect family life? How do the parents experience support, what kind of strain does the scarce economy put on their situation and how are their children coping? The data consist of interviews with parents living in this often problematic situation. Experiences of poverty and how it can be related to – and understood in the light of – cognitive difficulties and notions of ...

Optimizing the uptake of health checks for people with intellectual disabilities
This study documents the uptake of checks across general practitioner (GP) practices in Northern Ireland over a 3-year period. In all, 84% of GP practices provided health checks covering an estimated 87% of the population with intellectual (learning) disabilities. Overall 64% of people known to practices had received a health check which is significantly higher than comparable percentages of around 46% reported for England. Nevertheless the uptake by patients varied across the five trusts in Northern Ireland but less so than across the English health authorities. These variations were linked to the deployment of health fac...
