We describe our involvement with a local agency who support families from black and minority ethnic populations and who have children with a variety of intellectual disabilities. We then go on to detail the focus group we attended and how we incorporated the data generated into a more comprehensive story for our ‘virtual’ young man, Ahmed. A school-based intervention associated with improvements in cardiometabolic risk profiles in young people with intellectual disabilities
This study evaluates a multifactorial school-based intervention with the aim of decreasing cardiometabolic risk factors by means of a healthy lifestyle, primarily with daily physical activity and healthy food during school hours, at an upper secondary school for students with intellectual disabilities. The outcome is measured in terms of cardiometabolic risk factors and cardiovascular fitness, both known to increase the risk of future cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and cancer. Parental perceptions of family adjustment in childhood developmental disabilities
Based on the adjustment phase of the double ABC-X model of family stress (McCubbin and Patterson, 1983) this study examined the impact of parenting stress, positive appraisal of the impact of child disability on the family, and parental self-esteem on parental perceptions of family adjustment in families of children with disabilities.
