Sonographic localization of a retained urethral foreign body in an elderly patient
ABSTRACT A retained urethral foreign body is an uncommon presentation in the Emergency Department. The diagnosis and treatment of retained urethral foreign bodies are determined by their size, location, shape, and mobility and often require specialty consultation and operative intervention. In this case of a 74‐year‐old man with a self‐inserted, retained urethral foreign body, we present the utility of a bedside ultrasound to detect the depth, size, and distance from the meatus of the object to guide the approach to extraction of the object at the bedside in the Emergency Department. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The advantages of live/real ‐time three‐dimensional echocardiograhy in the assessment of left ventricular myxoma, which causes partial left ventricular outflow tract obstruction
We describe a young female patient with a giant left ventricular myxoma causing partial obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract, who underwent successful surgical resection. Real‐time three‐dimensional echocardiography yielded incremental value to two‐dimensional echocardiography by allowing better assess of the true size, extent, attachment, and morphology of the tumor. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Additional value of B ‐flow imaging in arterial wall calcifications
We present a case of a severely calcified stenosis of the right common femoral artery (CFA) diagnosed with the aid of B‐flow imaging. Both the CT angiography scan and CDU were limited by the presence of diffuse dense arterial calcifications. B‐flow imaging showed a >75% stenosis of the CFA. B‐flow imaging appears to improve the accuracy of CDU in the presence of calcified stenosis of the CFA. It is of clinical relevance to improve the duplex sonographic accuracy, ideally reducing the need for other imaging modalities prior to surgery. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Treatment of heterotopic caesarean scar pregnancy complicated with post termination increase in size of residual mass and morbidly adherent placenta
We report a case of a secundipara with heterotopic cesarean scar pregnancy (HCSP) treated with potassium chloride injection into the ectopic embryo followed by sac aspiration. The remaining “mass” increased in size threefold and was surrounded by a rich vascular network. An arteriovenous malformation was suspected; however, appropriate treatment was precluded because of the viability of the ectopic gestation. Sonographic examination revealed a morbidly adherent placenta, and attempt to resect the mass laparoscopically was complicated by bleeding that required hysterectomy. This case illustrates a complication of the in...

Claviform aspergillus ‐related vegetation in the left ventricle of a patient with systemic lupus erythematosus
ABSTRACT A 38‐year‐old woman was diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus and received immunosuppressive therapy. After 6 months of treatment, workup for low‐grade fever yielded elevated enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay titers for Aspergillus antigen in serum and ascites, leading to the diagnosis of disseminated aspergillosis. Transthoracic echocardiography revealed a claviform vegetation attached to the left ventricular anterior septum. Two days after the start of antifungal Amphotericin‐B therapy, the patient suffered from several neurologic disorders. A second transthoracic echocardiography revealed that t...
