Tacrolimus interaction with oral oestrogen in kidney transplant recipients: A case ‐control study
This study assessed the potential tacrolimus interaction with oral conjugated oestrogen in kidney transplant recipients who received conjugated oestrogen as prophylaxis against bleeding, before kidney biopsy. MethodsIn this case‐control study, 13 kidney transplant recipients who received oral conjugated oestrogen as prophylaxis against uraemic bleeding before allograft biopsy were considered as cases. Thirteen matched kidney transplant recipients with similar immunosuppressive regimen served as controls. In this study, comparisons were made between the groups regarding daily dose, blood trough concentrations and calculat...

Risk of new ‐onset diabetes mellitus during treatment with low‐dose statins in Japan: A retrospective cohort study
According to this study, the use of high‐potency statins (atorvastatin, pitavastatin, and rosuvastatin) at a low standard daily dose in Japanese patients significantly increased the risk of new‐onset diabetes mellitus (NODM) compared with low‐potency statins (fluvastatin, pravastatin, and simvastatin). Development and clinical application of an evidence ‐based pharmaceutical care service algorithm in acute coronary syndrome
Summary What is known and objectiveDrug therapies are critical for preventing secondary complications in acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The purpose of this study was to develop and apply a pharmaceutical care service (PCS) algorithm for ACS and confirm that it is applicable through a prospective clinical trial. MethodsThe ACS‐PCS algorithm was developed according to extant evidence‐based treatment and pharmaceutical care guidelines. Quality assurance was conducted through two methods: literature comparison and expert panel evaluation. The literature comparison was used to compare the content of the algorithm with the r...

Iatrogenic risk factors associated with hospital readmission of elderly patients: A matched case ‐control study using a clinical data warehouse
Summary What is knownHospital readmission within 30 days of patient discharge has become a standard to judge the quality of hospitalizations. It is estimated that 14% of the elderly, people over 75 years old or those over 65 with comorbidities, are at risk of readmission, of which 23% are avoidable. It may be possible to identify elderly patients at risk of readmission and implement steps to reduce avoidable readmissions. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to identify iatrogenic risk factors for readmission. The secondary objective was to evaluate the rate of drug‐related readmissions (DRRs) among all readmissions and ...

Paralysis of the external popliteal sciatic nerve associated with daptomycin administration
We report a case of a 62‐year‐old man who developed external popliteal sciatic nerve paralysis after 22 days of therapy with daptomycin. What is new and conclusion: We present an uncommon and not previously reported adverse event. We have also analysed a possible alteration in a metabolic pathway (ABCB1 gene polymorphisms) that, in some patients, could explain certain drug adverse events. What is new and conclusionWe present an uncommon and not previously reported adverse event. Effect of ultraviolet irradiation on free radical scavenging activity of immunosuppressants used in lung transplantation and comparative electron paramagnetic resonance study of kinetics of their interactions with model free radicals
Summary What is known and objectiveThe immunosuppressive drugs used in solid organ transplantation or autoimmunological processes were studied by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy to estimate their free radical scavenging activity. The interactions of immunosuppressants with free radicals were examined by an X‐band (9.3 GHz) EPR spectroscopy and a model of DPPH free radicals. MethodsThe EPR spectra of DPPH and DPPH interacting with individual drugs were compared. Kinetic studies were performed, and the effect of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation on the free radical scavenging activity of the tested drugs was ...

Intravenous ketamine infusion for a patient with treatment ‐resistant major depression: a 10‐month follow‐up
Summary What is known and objectiveKetamine in a subanaesthetic dose has been shown to produce rapid antidepressant effects. Here, we describe a long‐term follow‐up case of a Korean patient with severe major depression who received repeated ketamine intravenous therapy (KIT). Case descriptionA 49‐year‐old woman with a 6‐year history of treatment‐resistant major depression was given KIT once every 1 or 2 weeks over 10 months, for a total of 36 treatments. Her mood stabilized, and she showed a nearly 50% reduction in the severity of her depressive symptom. What is new and conclusionLong‐term repeated KIT may ...
