How do people become plasma and platelet donors in a VNR context?
ConclusionOur findings suggest the existence of diversified donor trajectories, and confirm the importance of conducting more in‐depth analyses of the sequence of events occurring along PPDs career. BCAs should develop strategies carefully tailored to different potential clienteles if they wish to convert whole blood donors to apheresis donation, and also focus on recruiting and retaining young PPDs. Mononuclear cell collection for extracorporeal photopheresis: Concentrate characteristics for off ‐line UV‐A irradiation procedure
ConclusionOur study confirms good results for both cell separators. Blood volume processed being equal, Cobe collects a number of total nucleated cells significantly higher than Optia. Optia, collecting only target cells without significant erythrocytes, granulocytes and platelets contamination, is able to collect a leukapheretic product particularly suitable for ECP. Short ‐term side effects and attitudes towards second donation: A comparison of related and unrelated haematopoietic stem cell donors
We present a prospective, observational study of 1,957 donors, focusing mainly on the differences between related and unrelated donors. Related donors are reported to have more comorbidities, but similar side effects compared with unrelated donors. Side effects after BM or PBSC donation are generally of short duration and in this study no deaths, myocardial infarctions, splenic ruptures, or thromboembolic events are reported. Interestingly, related donors express more hesitancy towards donating again when asked 1 month after donation. (Source: Journal of Clinical Apheresis)

Dietary citrate and plasma ionized calcium: Implications for platelet donors
Conclusions: Citrus juice may lower [Ca2+] for 2‐3 hours. This could add to the effect of IV citrate infusion during platelet donation, thus worsening the expected fall in [Ca2+]. This, in turn, would likely increase the rate and severity of hypocalcemic toxicity. It is prudent to advise platelet donors to avoid high citrate anion beverages, such as citrus juice, for at least 4 hours prior to donation. (Source: Journal of Clinical Apheresis)

Plasma exchange for the management of refractory pruritus of cholestasis: A report of three cases and review of literature
ConclusionOur results in conjunction with the published literature show that severe and intractable pruritus associated with cholestasis could be successfully treated with TPE, irrespective of the underlying disease, and can be done safely. (Source: Journal of Clinical Apheresis)

Formatting an experiential learning education module to encourage dysphagia assessment in apheresis patients
ConclusionsThe study results showed that the both types of teaching strategies are possible with nurses and they were receptive to both. Although the results of this study did not show a significant difference in practice, more research is needed to determine how to raise awareness and put this into practice. Role of plasma exchange, leukocytapheresis, and plasma diafiltration in management of refractory macrophage activation syndrome
We report the case of steroid and CsA resistant s‐JIA associated MAS misdiagnosed as Kawasaki disease (KD), who was successfully treated with the combination of plasma exchange (PE) and leukocytapheresis (LCAP) followed by plasma diafiltration (PDF). PE + LCAP effectively removed proinflammatory cytokines and reduced the number of peripheral white blood cells. Furthermore, PDF also removed proinflammatory cytokines as effectively as PE + LCAP. Early diagnosis of s‐JIA is necessary to avoid developing MAS. The measurement of serum ferritin and IL‐18 levels are useful for differentiating s‐JIA from KD. Aphere...

Impact of lipoprotein apheresis with dextran ‐sulfate adsorption on the expression of genes involved in cardiovascular health in the blood of patients with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia
In conclusion, this study demonstrated that a single LA treatment with DSA has very limited impact on the whole blood expression of a broad spectrum of genes associated with cardiovascular health. Our results suggest that contact between blood cells and the primary membrane or extracorporeal circulation could upregulate the expression of EGR1, EGR3, BCL3, and MMP9 in blood cells.
