Therapeutic plasma exchange in chronic dysimmune peripheral neuropathies: A 10 ‐year retrospective study
ConclusionTPE appears to be effective in CIDP and PPN, and ineffective in Lewis‐Sumner and POEMS syndromes. Interestingly, anti‐MAG neuropathy patients showed a good rate of response to TPE. Regarding these preliminary results, a randomized trial would be very worthwhile in this disease for which there is no evidence based treatment to date. (Source: Journal of Clinical Apheresis)

Plasma exchange in the intensive care unit: Technical aspects and complications
ConclusionPlasma exchange is a relatively safe and generally well‐tolerated procedure in the ICU setting. Most adverse events are unpredictable and related to minor allergic reactions. (Source: Journal of Clinical Apheresis)

Predictors for successful PBSC collection on the fourth day of G ‐CSF‐induced mobilization in allogeneic stem cell donors
In conclusion, PBSC collection on day 4 will not result in a successful harvest in most stem cell donors, however using a twice daily G‐CSF scheme increases the yield. (Source: Journal of Clinical Apheresis)

Case report of male child with elevated lipoprotein (a) leading to acute ischemic stroke
Abstract Acute ischemic stroke (AIS) in children is rare with almost 40% diagnosed as cryptogenic. One possible mechanism associated with AIS is an elevated Lipoprotein (a) [Lp(a)] level. Here, we discuss the case of an 11‐year old boy who presented with multiple thrombotic strokes secondary to elevated Lp(a), which was identified as the only risk factor and immediately treated with lipoprotein apheresis (LA). Eighteen months post‐AIS, he is still receiving LA treatments and has made remarkable progress in his recovery without another cerebrovascular event. (Source: Journal of Clinical Apheresis)

G ‐CSF mobilized peripheral blood stem cell collection for allogeneic transplantation in healthy donors: Analysis of factors affecting yield
Abstract Mobilized PBSC are the main source for allogeneic HSCT. We aimed to evaluate factors that affect CD34+ cell yield including the donor's age, gender, BSA, processed blood volume and the method of G‐CSF dose calculation. Data from 170 healthy donors were analyzed. The concentration of CD34+ cells in the peripheral blood (PB) and the processed volume of blood were significantly correlated to CD34+ cells yield (P < .00005 and P < .001, respectively). The G‐CSF dose per m2 was significantly correlated to the concentration of CD34+ cells in the PB (P = .0003) and in the product (P = .01). Small...

Methods for the detection and serum depletion of porcine galectin ‐3
ConclusionsMethods have been developed for the detection and depletion of porcine Gal‐3. These methods will be used to study the specific effects of Gal‐3 depletion via apheresis in porcine models of disease. (Source: Journal of Clinical Apheresis)

Acute mechanical hemolysis as a complication of extracorporeal photopheresis in a low ‐weight child
Graft‐versus‐host disease (GVHD) is a complication of allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation with high morbidity and mortality. Extracorporeal photopheresis (ECP) is an effective therapy for treating medication‐refractory GVHD, however, there is scant evidence of whether ECP can be safely performed in patients weighing less than 15 kg. Here, we report the implementation of a successful protocol to perform ECP in a 21‐month‐old, 10.6 kg female with medication‐refractory GVHD. Our initial ECP treatment resulted in significant hemolysis that was most likely mechanical. After procedural adjustments that...

The impact of citrate concentration on adhesion of platelets and leukocytes to adsorbents in whole blood lipoprotein apheresis
In conclusion, citrate influences activation and adhesion of platelets and leukocytes in a concentration‐dependent manner, and ACD‐A 1:20, equivalent to a citrate concentration of 5.6 mM in whole blood, ensures minimal cellular activation during passage of whole blood over polyacrylate‐based adsorbents. Plateletpheresis efficiency and mathematical correction of software ‐derived platelet yield prediction: A linear regression and ROC modeling approach
ConclusionTrima Accel v6.0 software consistently underestimated PLT yields. Simple correction derived from linear regression analysis accurately corrected this underestimation and ROC analysis identified a precise cut‐off to reliably predict a DP. (Source: Journal of Clinical Apheresis)
