HIFU for prostate cancer – a nursing perspective
ABSTRACT High‐intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) for prostate cancer treatment is a minimally invasive treatment option that is becoming more widely available within the UK and worldwide. The published data available include outcomes over a 15‐year period, although these are mainly based on the efficacy of the treatment. The nursing care for men choosing to undergo HIFU for their prostate cancer has developed as the technology of the treatment has evolved. This paper seeks to outline the current nursing care within one practice in the UK, with the focus being very much on preparation of the patient undergoing HIFU and...

Improving nurse computer proficiency with a tri‐focal educational intervention
ABSTRACT Use of the electronic health record is expanding rapidly. Nurses are primary users of this technology and more than half rate their own computer skills to be below average. Nurses at this ambulatory genitourinary oncology practice recognized a need to improve information technology (IT) skills in the nursing team. An assessment was undertaken of nurses working in the unit by means of a confidential survey. The survey questioned nurses' ability to perform unit‐specific tasks as well as offering a free text component to identify further educational needs. Survey responses identified a need to improve computer prof...

Compliance of urinary continence care for Japanese residents on short‐stay respite services
This study examined nursing ward managers' perceptions regarding compliance of urinary continence care among nursing staff, for residents on short‐stay respite services (SSRS) at health care facilities in Japan, and to examine the relationship between the compliance and residents' levels of activities of daily living upon discharge. We sent questionnaires to nursing managers at all facilities in the Kanto and Shinetsu regions in Japan (1072 facilities). The questionnaires asked about SSRS, compliance of urinary continence care for residents on the respite services and the residents' levels of activities of daily living u...

Cardiovascular disease: the effect of erectile dysfunction on adherence to cardiovascular disease medication
ABSTRACT Due to their similar aetiologies, cardiovascular disease (CVD) and erectile dysfunction (ED) are closely linked, with the prevalence of ED being approximately 75% for individuals at high risk of CVD. ED can have a detrimental effect on quality of life not only for the individual but also his sexual partner which in turn impacts upon their intimate relationship. Some CVD medications have been found to have a negative effect on erectile function and therefore act as an influential factor for the cessation of important CVD medication. Low adherence to CVD medication has been linked to increased health costs, hospital...

Outcome analysis of ultrasound‐guided prostate biopsy procedure: a retrospective audit comparing associate consultant and nurse specialist in urology to determine the effectiveness and safety of a nurse‐led prostate biopsy clinic
This article presents a retrospective audit that compared the practice of a nurse specialist to a urologist while undertaking transrectal ultrasound with prostatic biopsies, the definitive investigation in the detection of prostate cancer. Results have shown that the nurse‐led service is equivalent to that of the urologist in cancer detection and morbidity rates. The audit has shown that the nurse‐led prostate biopsy clinic is both effective and safe in practice. In addition, the service has reduced the waiting times for patients needing this procedure to less than a week. (Source: International Journal of Urological Nursing)

Evaluation of a clinical pathway for ‘radical laparoscopic prostatectomy’: an interrupted time series study
ABSTRACT The aim of this study was a rigorous evaluation of a clinical pathway (CP) in patients who underwent a radical laparoscopic prostatectomy (RLP). The study was performed at a German university hospital. The Department of Urology has considerable expertise and performs more than 200 RLP per year. The CP for ‘RLP’ was developed based on the best available evidence and introduced in July 2003. It was composed of six modules, and in each module standardized recommendations for clinical examination, therapy and outcome measurement were given. An interrupted time series design with multiple linear regression models w...

Unusual complication of male urethral catheterization: intussusception of prepuce into urethral meatus
We present a patient who experienced urinary retention with a comorbid phimosis and redundant prepuce, most likely complications of diabetes mellitus. Additionally, we report a rare complication of difficult catheterization, where the prepuce intussuscepted into the urethral meatus. Attempts to change the catheter with poor visualization of the external meatus secondary to diabetic phimosis resulted in telescoping of the prepuce into the urethra. Circumcision and meatotomy of the external meatus alleviated the acute issue and prevented potential problems with future catheterizations. (Source: International Journal of Urological Nursing)

Cannon‐ball bladder stones: a complication of prolonged recumbence and benign prostate enlargement
We present the case of an 85‐year‐old frail gentleman who was bedridden for the last 25 years and presented with haematuria. On evaluation he was found to have multiple large bladder stones and bladder diverticuli with enlarged prostate gland. This case highlights a relatively rare urological complication of prolonged recumbency, and emphasizes the importance of proper nursing care, early detection, management and prevention of such complications.
