Nurses experiences discussing sexuality with urinary catheter patients
ABSTRACT The aim of this article was to establish registered nurses experiences of discussing sexuality with urinary catheter patients. A urinary catheter is used to provide drainage for those people who are unable to drain their bladder independently. Urinary catheters can cause issues with sex, sexuality and body image. This is a qualitative research study using thematic concept analysis to review data. The study used semi‐structured interviews that were audio‐taped during 2015. Nine community nurses participated in this study. Four themes emerged: the importance of the nurse–patient relationship, peer support and ...

In the case of prostate cancer patients, are there advantages in cancer nurse‐led follow‐up?
ABSTRACT The role of cancer nurse specialist (CNS) has expanded reflecting rapid changes in the field of prostate cancer diagnostics, treatments and improved survival outcomes. Extended roles such as CNS‐led follow‐up are aimed at helping men and their families to cope better with the impact of the disease. Aim of this study is to compare medical with CNS‐led follow‐up by assessing the patient experience, quality of life and emotional wellbeing. Primary sources of research articles were searched on selected databases: MEDLINE (1995 to September 2015), EMBASE (1995 to September 2015) and CINAHL (1995 to September 20...

A nurse‐driven process for timely removal of urinary catheters
ABSTRACT Catheter‐associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) comprises 30–40% of all health care‐acquired infections, and 70–80% of these infections are related with use of indwelling urinary catheters. This quality improvement (QI) project was initiated to evaluate the effectiveness of a nurse‐driven urinary catheter removal process in reducing the duration of urinary catheter usage in a general medical ward in Singapore. A pre‐ and post‐study design was adopted. The pre‐implementation data included urinary catheter utilization ratio and CAUTI rates. Over a 6‐months period, nurses used a nurse‐driven u...

Risk factors of urinary incontinence in women: a literature review
ABSTRACT The purpose of this literature review is to recapitulate the risk factors and predictors of urinary incontinence (UI) in women identified in different published studies, thereby filling such gap in knowledge. The review identified primary research papers published in peer‐reviewed journals on risk factors and predictors of UI. The search strategy used for collecting the literature was done using PubMed, Google Scholar and CINAHL databases from 2002 to 2012. The full text articles were obtained as part of the second stage selection process, using the pre‐agreed selection criteria. Twelve articles were identifie...

Mortality and sexuality after diagnosis of penile cancer: a participative study
ABSTRACT Survival for penile cancer is high but treatment can have a long‐term detrimental effect on urological function and quality of life. Owing to its rarity, it is difficult to include men with penile cancer in research about their condition. The aim of this study was to identify aspects of their diagnosis and treatment that they would want explored in penile cancer research. The study employed a participative, mixed qualitative methods design; it utilized focus groups and patient‐conducted interviews, combined into a 1 day ‘pilot workshop’. The data were analysed using framework analysis. ‘Early signs and...

A fuzzy logic model for differential diagnosis of lower urinary tract dysfunctions
ABSTRACT Lower urinary tract dysfunctions (LUTD) restrict quality of life, resulting in decreased work productivity and emotional well‐being. However, most people are not diagnosed because they do not seek medical treatment. In addition, some facilities do not adequately train health professionals in the evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of these conditions. The study's objective was to develop a decision support system modelled on fuzzy logic that defines LUTD using the terminology of the International Continence Society. This methodological study aimed to develop a model that uses the maximum–minimum composition (m...

Primary treatment of female urethral stricture by nurses leads to improved outcomes
We present our study of treating FUS by repeated UD in a dedicated cystoscopy and dilation clinic managed by nurses. After the initial cystoscopy and dilation of FUS to 30 Fr, patients were followed up with in the dilation clinic at regular intervals. Over the past 5 years, 190 patients have been treated at our cystoscopy and dilation clinic and at are various stages of follow up. We find that the primary treatment of FUS by nurses at our institute leads to improved outcomes. Nurse‐led cystoscopies have been in vogue in Australia and the UK for some time now. There is an urgent need to expand the conventional indicatio...
