A cross-sectional study of retrospectively reported seasonality in native and non-native residents of Chukotka and Turkmenistan.
Authors: Putilov AA Abstract Seasonality represents a response of human mood, physiology, and behavior to annual variations in natural and social environment. A strong seasonal response is expected in non-native than native residents of such regions as Turkmenistan that is characterized by high air temperature in summer and Chukotka that is characterized by high-amplitude annual variation in both air temperature and day length. Seasonality was retrospectively reported by 732 residents of these regions. Self-reports on sleep-wake traits and mental and physical health were analyzed as possible confounding va...

Household waste and health risks affecting waste pickers and the environment in low- and middle-income countries.
Authors: Gutberlet J, Uddin SMN Abstract Household waste has evolved into a core urban challenge, with increased quantities of waste being generated and with more complex material compositions, often containing toxic and hazardous elements. Critical systems theory understands cities as urban metabolisms, with different material and energy flows, highlighting the circularity in production, consumption, and discard. Waste pickers in low- and medium-income countries work on dumps and landfills, sifting through highly contaminated household waste and are exposed to health hazards. This paper discusses the risk...

Preferred sampler inlet configurations for collection of aerosolized nano-scale materials.
CONCLUSIONS: When completing air monitoring for nano-scale materials, inlets on most collection devices (filters, tubing) do not impact aspiration efficiency. This means that it is not necessary to match inlet configurations when using multiple methods to collect and analyze nano-scale materials. Carpal tunnel syndrome prevalence: an evaluation of workers at a raw poultry processing plant.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings suggest that poultry processing jobs continue to be hazardous with workers at risk for CTS. Recommendations for the study population were provided to reduce exposure and CTS risk among workers. Estimating infants' and toddlers' inhalation exposure to fragrance ingredients in baby personal care products.
This study demonstrates an in vitro method for measuring breathing zone air concentrations of fragrances from bath products and lotions. It employed simulated infant bathing and lotion application events and a robot to mimic a toddler's movement within a bathroom setting. The air concentrations in an infant's breathing zone were between <1 and 5 μg/m3 for each of seven common fragrance ingredients, while that in the breathing zone of toddlers in the bathroom was ≤ 1μg/m3. The air concentrations from the bathing additive were linearly related to their Henry's law constants and from the lotion inversely related to the...

Asbestos knowledge and awareness level in central part of Anatolia.
Conclusion In this region of Anatolia, knowledge and awareness level of asbestos was low among people at risk for environmental asbestos exposure. People should be aware of asbestos and its hazards by a well-designed training program and be monitored for asbestos-related diseases. Health assessment of self-employed in the food service industry.
Conclusions The study highlights the need for occupational health services for self-employed workers in France so that they may benefit from prevention of occupational risks and health surveillance. Results were presented to the self-employed healthcare insurance fund in order to establish an occupational health risks prevention system. Exposure assessment of non-electric ice resurfacer operators in indoor ice rinks: a pilot study.
Authors: McLennon T, Hon CY Abstract Exposure of ice resurfacer operators to indoor air contaminants was measured in six indoor ice arenas. A standardized questionnaire on technical and operational features was employed and indoor airborne concentrations of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), nitric oxide (NO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and total volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured. Air samples were collected using a range of direct reading instruments attached to the driver's seat of the resurfacer. The range of mean exposure concentrations via positional sampling (...

English language YouTube videos as a source of lead poisoning-related information: a cross-sectional study.
In this study, professional videos had more accurate information regarding lead but their videos were less likely to be viewed compared to consumer-generated videos and news videos. If professional videos about lead poisoning can attract more viewers, more people would be better informed and could possibly influence policy agendas, thereby helping communities being affected by lead exposure. Emerging health risks from agricultural intensification in Southeast Asia: a systematic review.
Conclusion Overall, the current knowledge on health risks appears to be limited. More research on long-term health implications and a wider range of contaminants are needed if sustainable benefits are to be obtained from agricultural intensification. Lifetime exposure to self-reported occupational noise and prevalent rheumatoid arthritis in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2011-2012).
This study aimed to determine whether occupational noise exposure was associated with an elevated risk of prevalent RA in the U.S. general population. Data from the 2011 to 2012 cross-sectional, population-based National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used for secondary analysis. Self-reported lifetime exposure to very loud noise was linked to self-reported doctor-diagnosed RA in a sample of 4192 participants. Weighted logistic regression was used to obtain nationally representative prevalence odds ratios (OR). The main and fully adjusted models yielded OR = 3.98 (95% CI: 1.74, 9.11) and OR = 2.84 (95% CI...

A pilot study of maternal exposure to organophosphate pesticides and newborn neurodevelopment in Thailand.
The objective of this study was to evaluate whether prenatal exposures to organophosphate (OP) pesticides from maternal agricultural use are associated with neonatal neurobehavioral effects. A pilot study conducted in three provinces in Thailand measured maternal urinary metabolites of OP pesticides in pregnant women at 7 months gestation and at birth. Within 3 days of birth, 82 newborns underwent neurobehavioral testing using the Brazelton Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS). Comparison of the NBAS test results with maternal OP metabolite levels found the neonates NBAS Habituation cluster score increased with ma...

Assessment of indoor radon, thoron concentrations, and their relationship with seasonal variation and geology of Udhampur district, Jammu & Kashmir, India.
Conclusions The observed values of concentrations and average annual effective dose due to radon, thoron, and its progeny in the study area have been found to be below the recommended level of ICRP. The observed concentrations of 222Rn and 220Rn measured with active and passive techniques are found to be in good agreement.
