Working conditions, psychosocial environmental factors, and depressive symptoms among wage workers in South Korea.
CONCLUSIONS: There is a need to develop non-occupational intervention programs, which provide workers with training about workplace depression and improve social support, and the programs should provide time for employees to have active communication. Additionally, companies should provide employees with support to access mental healthcare thereby decreasing the occurrence of workplace depression. Field comparison of two inhalable samplers used in Italy to measure the wood dust exposure.
CONCLUSIONS: These findings confirm the presence of ultra-large particles in woodworking. The Italian cone and IOM samplers can be used interchangeably for personal wood dust exposure assessment, when the wood activities produce small-size particles. Systematic comparative content analysis of 17 psychosocial work environment questionnaires using a new taxonomy.
CONCLUSIONS: There are major content differences among analyzed questionnaires. This study offers a means for selecting a scale on the basis of content. PMID: 27367232 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health)

The power of local action in occupational health: the adoption of local exhaust ventilation in the Chicago tuckpointing trade.
This study uses a case study to explore the adoption of local exhaust ventilation in tuckpointing operations in the Chicago area. Sources of data for this research include interviews with a diverse range of key informants and the review of archival material. RESULTS: This case study found local unions, municipal regulators, contractors, and major public users of construction services played a central role in the events and milestones that led to the early adoption of local exhaust ventilation in Chicago. The adoption of local exhaust ventilation technology in Chicago demonstrates the potential for local actors to f...

Examination of postures and frequency of musculoskeletal disorders among manual workers in Calcutta, India.
CONCLUSIONS: This sample had a high frequency of reported MSDs, likely attributed to physiologically strenuous occupational activities repeated on average of 30-40 times daily. Ergonomic interventions, such as the use of handcarts, and occupational training are urgently needed. A commentary on Roggli's "The So-Called Short-Fiber Controversy".
Authors: Egilman D, Tran T Abstract Dr. Victor Roggli republished a "literature review and critical analysis" of the toxicity of short fiber asbestos. His paper was originally prepared and presented at a conference of asbestos defense lawyers. His review omitted published papers that indicate that short fiber asbestos is a carcinogen. We critically review his paper. PMID: 27219104 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health)

The attributable annual health costs of U.S. occupational lead poisoning.
CONCLUSIONS: Reducing allowable occupational lead limits produces annual societal benefits of almost $40,000 per highly exposed worker. Given underreporting of actual exposures and the omission of important health effects, this is likely a severe underestimate. The production of corporate research to manufacture doubt about the health hazards of products: an overview of the Exponent Bakeliteā„¢ simulation study.
Authors: Egilman DS Abstract Although corporate sponsorship of research does not necessarily lead to biased results, in some industries it has resulted in the publication of inaccurate and misleading information. Some companies have hired scientific consulting firms to retrospectively calculate exposures to products that are no longer manufactured or sold. As an example, this paper reviews one such study - a litigation-engendered study of Union Carbide Corporation's asbestos-containing product, Bakeliteā„¢. This analysis is based on previously secret documents produced as a result of litigation. The study ...

Chronic exposure to organophosphate (OP) pesticides and neuropsychological functioning in farm workers: a review.
CONCLUSIONS: Overall, evidence suggests an association between chronic occupational exposure to OP pesticides and neuropsychological effects. However, there is no consensus about the specific cognitive skills affected. Applicability of the comet assay in evaluation of DNA damage in healthcare providers' working with antineoplastic drugs: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
CONCLUSIONS: A mixture of personal parameters, comet assay methodological variables, and exposure characteristics may be responsible for heterogenic data from comet assay studies and interfere with obtaining conclusive results. Lack of quantitative environmental exposure measures and variation in comet assay protocols across studies are important obstacles in generalization of results. A test of safety, violence prevention, and civility climate domain-specific relationships with relevant workplace hazards.
This study suggests that the three climate domains share a common higher order construct that may predict relevant workplace hazards better than any of the scales alone. PMID: 27110930 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher] (Source: International Journal of Occupational and Environmental Health)
