Midline Lumbar Fusion Using Cortical Bone Trajectory Screws for Elderly Patients
ConclusionsIn our experience, MIDLF using CBT route seemed to reduce post-op wound pain significantly, so that elderly patients could ambulate earlier. It also had less screws loosening, especially for elderly or osteoporotic patients. (Source: International Journal of Gerontology)

Sorafenib-Induced Radiation in-Field Skin (SIRIS) Reaction: Unexpected Complication in Elder Hepatocellular Carcinoma Patients Received Sorafenib and Concurrent Radiation Therapy
We describe this phenomenon as Sorafenib induced radiation in-field skin (SIRIS) reaction, and the clinical course and radiation dosimetry of these patients were reviewed. The development of SIRIS reaction was primarily limited within the radiation treatment fields, and it occurred at a relatively low dose during the courses of RT. The SIRIS reaction progressed in a radiation dose-dependent manner and was recovered spontaneously after 3–4 weeks of radiation therapy. The SIRIS reaction implicates a unique phenomenon that systemic skin reaction of targeted therapeutics, such as sorafenib, might be limited or exacerbated in...

Solitary Skull Base Plasmacytoma with Sella Turcica Extension
Publication date: Available online 12 April 2018Source: International Journal of GerontologyAuthor(s): Isao Aoi, Wen-Zern Hwang, Tai-Ngar LuiSummaryA case of 65-year-old female with intrasellar mass was operated on under the diagnosis of pituitary adenoma. The final diagnosis of plasmacytoma was made by immunocytochemical stain of IgG and electron microscopical findings. Postoperatively, the radiological studies of systemic skeletal bone and cytology of bone marrow were normal. However, the serum IgG was high, and the urinary Bence-Jones protein (kappa type) was positive. Although these laboratory data normalized after ope...

Mirizzi Syndrome Complicated With Transverse Colon Fistula Presenting as Colonic Tumor: A Case Report and Literature Review
Publication date: Available online 12 April 2018Source: International Journal of GerontologyAuthor(s): Shih-Hsien Chuang, Ching-Wei Chang, Chen-Wang Chang, Cheng-Hsin Chu, Chien-Yuan HungSummaryAn 88-year-old man was admitted because of right upper quadrant abdominal pain and diagnosed as having acute cholecystitis. He underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiography for jaundice and showed common hepatic duct narrowing with external compression compatible with Mirizzi syndrome. Owing to his age and fragility, he received only internal drainage with a plastic stent instead of operation. The right upper quadrant abdominal pa...

A New Method to get the LVEF Reference Values of the Healthy Adult Male by Heart Rate and Geographical Environment Factors
ConclusionThe Chinese healthy adult male LVEF distribution showed a downward trend from south to north. Some geographical environment factors have impact on LVEF reference values including latitude, annual precipitation amount and mean air temperature distribution. LVEF is negative correlation with heart rate. When geographical environment factors and individual's heart rate are known, the local and individual's LVEF reference values can be derived from the formulas. The Comparison of Exosome and Exosomal Cytokines between Young and Old Individuals with or without Gastric Cancer
ConclusionGastric cancer and aging affect serum exosome and exosomal cytokines levels. Future studies would require the analysis of more diverse cytokines in exosomes derived from multiple types of cancer. (Source: International Journal of Gerontology)

Ceftriaxone-Induced Non-Convulsive Status Epilepticus in an Elderly Patient with Renal Insufficiency
We present a case of ceftriaxone–induced non-convulsive status epilepticus in treatment of complicated urinary tract infection and acute on chronic kidney disease (CKD) for a 71-year-old woman. The prognosis of NCSE is poor in elderly patients due to a delay in diagnosis and treatment may be associated with increased mortality or neuronal loss, as well as dysfunction of cognitive and behavioral abilities. Emergent and continuous electroencephalogram monitoring can assist physicians in both early recognition and accurate management of NCSE. Immediate withdrawal of cephalosporin is necessary. Antiepileptic drugs may be hel...

Qianliening Capsule Promotes Mitochondrial Pathway Mediated the Apoptosis of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Epithelial-1 Cells by Regulating the miRNA-181a
ConclusionQC could induce BPH-1 cells apoptosis by regulating miRNA-181a mediated mitochondrial dependent apoptosis pathway, which may be one of the important mechanisms that QC treated benign prostatic hyperplasia. (Source: International Journal of Gerontology)

Estimating the Calibrating Coefficient of the Framingham Score to Predict Risk of Coronary Heart Disease in the Taiwanese Population
ConclusionWe generated Framingham calibration coefficient for the Taiwanese population. We recommend that the mean of predictors and the baseline survivorship derived from TwSHHH should be used in the model. Nonetheless, it is crucial to develop a risk function specific for this population. (Source: International Journal of Gerontology)

Ulcerative Colitis in Elderly People: An Emerging Issue
Publication date: Available online 30 May 2018Source: International Journal of GerontologyAuthor(s): Wei-Chen Lin, Ming-Jen Chen, Cheng-Hsin Chu, Tsang-En Wang, Horng-Yuan Wang, Chen-Wang ChangSummaryUlcerative colitis (UC) is a common cause of chronic gastrointestinal disease in the developed world, which has a bimodal age distribution, with 10–30% of the affected population older than 60 years. Elderly patients with UC will be seen more frequently with the aging of the population and increasing incidence of UC. The management of UC in the elderly population is more complex due to comorbidities and polypharmacy. This re...
