Sex differences in children's toy preferences: A systematic review, meta ‐regression, and meta‐analysis
Abstract From an early age, most children choose to play with toys typed to their own gender. In order to identify variables that predict toy preference, we conducted a meta‐analysis of observational studies of the free selection of toys by boys and girls aged between 1 and 8 years. From an initial pool of 1788 papers, 16 studies (787 boys and 813 girls) met our inclusion criteria. We found that boys played with male‐typed toys more than girls did (Cohen's d = 1.03, p < .0001) and girls played with female‐typed toys more than boys did (Cohen's d = −0.91, p < .0001). Meta‐regression showed no signif...

Maternal cognitive guidance and early education and care as precursors of mathematical development at preschool age and in ninth grade
This study examined, in a sample of 66 mother–infant dyads, 2 early contextual precursors of later mathematical development at preschool age and at the end of comprehensive school. The path analyses showed that maternal autonomy support and scaffolding observed during joint play interactions in infancy, and time spent in various care contexts beyond infancy contributed more to variation in numerical skills than spatial skills tested at preschool age. Maternal autonomy supportive behaviours were related to differences in mathematics and other school grades collected in ninth grade, even after controlling for time spent in...

Family members' strategies as allies during naturalistic polyadic family conflicts
This study investigated the strategies used by family members as allies during naturalistic polyadic family conflicts (i.e., involving at least three family members). Thirty‐nine families with two children (aged 4 and 6 years) were observed in the home setting. Employing transcripts of their interactions, emergent coding revealed five strategies used by allies: (a) social rule understanding, (b) control, (c) informational, (d) simple (e.g., dismissive), and (e) elaborate (e.g., proposals). Overall, both parents and children used control and informational strategies most often. Parents used each of the five strategies mo...

Executive attention at 8  years: Concurrent and longitudinal predictors and individual differences
Abstract Executive attention, the attention necessary to reconcile conflict among simultaneous attentional demands, is vital to children's daily lives. This attention develops rapidly as the anterior cingulate cortex and prefrontal areas mature during early and middle childhood. However, the developmental course of executive attention is not uniform among children. Therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to examine the role of individual differences in the development of executive attention by exploring the concurrent and longitudinal contributions to its development at 8 years of age. Executive attention was pre...

Paternal parenting, child temperament, and problem behaviour: An investigation among young Hong Kong children
This study examined the interplay between child temperament and paternal parenting with regard to problem behaviour among Chinese preschoolers. Both mothers and fathers reported child behaviour problems, emotionality, persistence, and their parenting behaviour. Both emotionality and persistence interacted with aversive paternal parenting in relation to child externalizing behaviours, controlling for maternal parenting. (Source: Infant and Child Development)
