Heart rate as a predictor of cardiovascular risk
ConclusionHR has an important negative effect on cardio‐ and cerebrovascular morbidity and mortality. Future longitudinal investigations should clarify HR significance and optimal HR reduction for primary and secondary prevention in cardio‐ and cerebrovascular events. This article is protected by copyright. Apelin ‐13 treatment enhances the stability of atherosclerotic plaques
ConclusionsApelin‐13 treatment for 3 weeks did not alter the lesion size, but it significantly enhanced the stable phenotype of atherosclerotic plaques and improved serum lipid profile. These results indicate that activation of apelin system decreases plaque vulnerability. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. Title: Prognostic significance of arterial stiffness and osteoprotegerin in patients with stable coronary artery disease
ConclusionsThese findings extend the current knowledge concerning the role of arterial stiffness as powerful biomarkers in cardiovascular disease. Measurement of PWV might have a role in ascertaining prognosis and managing treatment in patients with stable CAD after PCI.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. Soluble ST2 in end ‐stage heart failure, before and after support with a left ventricular assist device
ConclusionLevels of sST2 are elevated in end‐stage HF patients with variability that suggests multiple inputs to a pro‐inflammatory and pro‐fibrotic pathway. Cardiogenic shock and increased CRP levels are associated with higher sST2 levels. LVAD support results in a significant drop in sST2 levels with normalization within 3 months post implantation. This suggests that LVAD support leads to lessening of fibrosis and inflammation, which might eventually be used to target medical policy: explantation of the LVAD versus permanent use or cardiac transplantation. This article is protected by copyright. Cardiorespiratory fitness and age ‐related arterial stiffness in lupus
ConclusionsThe results of the present study suggest that cardiorespiratory fitness attenuates the age‐related arterial stiffening in women with systemic lupus erythematosus and might thus contribute to the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease in this population. Since the cross‐sectional design precludes establishing causal relationships, future clinical trials should confirm or contrast these findings. This article is protected by copyright. High ‐density lipoprotein from end‐stage renal disease patients exhibits superior cardioprotection and increase in sphingosine‐1‐phosphate
In this study, we compared plasma levels of sphingosine‐1‐phosphate (S1P), HDL‐associated S1P (HDL‐S1P) and HDL‐mediated protection against oxidative stress between CKD and control patients. MethodsHigh‐density lipoprotein was individually isolated from 20 CKD patients and 20 controls. Plasma S1P, apolipoprotein M (apoM) concentrations, HDL‐S1P content and the capacity of HDL to protect cardiomyocytes against doxorubicin‐induced oxidative stress in vitro were measured. ResultsChronic kidney disease patients showed a typical profile with significant reductions in plasma HDL cholesterol and albumin and an in...
