MicroRNA ‐145 regulates disabled‐2 and Wnt3a expression in cardiomyocytes under hyperglycemia
ConclusionsAng II downregulates miR‐145 to regulate Dab2 and Wnt3a/ß‐catenin expression in cardiomyocytes under high glucose concentration. Ang II plays a critical role in the regulation of miR‐145 in cardiomyocytes under hyperglycemic conditions. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. E ‐Selectin Gene in Essential Hypertension: A Case‐Control Study
ConclusionsA significant association of E‐selectin (Leu554Phe) gene and increased expression of E‐selectin gene at mRNA and protein levels in patients might be related with the genetic predisposition to develop essential hypertension. This article is protected by copyright. Tophus size is associated with hallux valgus deformity in gout
ConclusionsOur results confirm a high prevalence of HV in gouty patients. We also observed a correlation between the size of the US tophus and the angles defining HV, which suggests a link between urate deposition load and HV. Early urate‐lowering therapy for gout could limit the occurrence of HV.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. (Source: European Journal of Clinical Investigation)

Decreased platelet inhibition by P2Y12 receptor blockers in anemia
ConclusionAnemia is associated with decreased platelet inhibition by ADP P2Y12 receptor antagonists after elective and acute percutaneous interventions with stent implantation. However, due to inconsistencies between different platelet function tests additional data are needed to clarify the role of anemia for platelet inhibition. This article is protected by copyright. Serum paraoxonase ‐1 activity is inversely related to free thyroxine in euthyroid subjects: The PREVEND Cohort Study
ConclusionsSerum PON‐1 activity is inversely associated with free T4 in euthyroid subjects, suggesting that low‐normal thyroid function may affect PON‐1 regulation. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved. (Source: European Journal of Clinical Investigation)

Association of oxidative stress with clinical characteristics in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
ConclusionThe preliminary results demonstrate that plasma NSSA levels were inversely correlated with tender and swollen joints count and DAS28 and that NSSA was independently associated with DAS28, in RA patients treated with traditional DMARDs; and provide initial support that NSSA may be used as a biomarker of disease activity in RA patients. This article is protected by copyright. The dilemma of monotherapy or combination therapy in community ‐acquired pneumonia
ConclusionDue to the considerable heterogeneity and inclusion of unadjusted data, it is difficult to recommend a specific antibiotic regimen over another. Specific antibiotic regimens, study design and the characteristics of the population under study seem to influence the reported outcomes. (Source: European Journal of Clinical Investigation)

Effect of enterovirus infections on asthma in young children: A  national cohort study
ConclusionThe incidence of asthma was higher in the EV cohort than in the non‐EV cohort, comprising children aged ≤5 years, regardless of sex, urbanization level, parental occupation or season. In particular, the risk of asthma was higher in children with a higher frequency of admission, even in the absence of atopy or other respiratory infections. Cytokine responses, microbial etiology and short ‐term outcome in community‐acquired pneumonia
ConclusionsIn this CAP cohort, admission levels of IL‐6, IL‐8 and MIP‐1β were associated with disease severity and/or adverse short‐term outcome. Still, for most mediators, only non‐significant variations in inflammatory responses were observed for groups of microbial etiology, disease severity and short‐term outcome. This article is protected by copyright.
