Comparative effectiveness of chemical biocides and Acalypha wilkesiana leaf extract against postharvest fungal deteriogens of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) fruits
This study determined the in-vitro and in-vivo activities of Voriconazole (VOR, 1µg), Nystatin (NYS, 25µg), Fluconazole (FLC, 100µg), red force® (RFC) [Copper (I) oxide, 60%+Metalaxyl-M 6% WP], ultimax plus® (UPL) [Metalaxyl 12% WP+Copper (I) oxide 60% WP], and forcelet® (FCE) [Carbendazim 50% WP] and Acalypha wilkesiana (Red Acalypha) on fungal deteriogens obtained from deteriorated sweet orange fruits. The 22 fungal deteriogens tested had in-vitro susceptibility of 13.0±2.6–28.7±1.2mm inhibition zone for VOR (n =14), 9.3±1.2–28.0±3.0mm for NYS (n =21), 7.7±1.5–21.7±1.5mm for FLC (n =4), 13.3±1.2–31.7...

Histomorphological changes in induced benign prostatic hyperplasia with exogenous testosterone and estradiol in adult male rats treated with aqueous ethanol extract of Secamone afzelii
Publication date: Available online 24 December 2016 Source:Egyptian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences Author(s): Mbaka Godwin, Anunobi Charles, Ogunsina Samson, Osiagwu Daniel Secamone afzelii (S. afzelii) used locally to manage benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) was used to treat exogenously induced BPH in adult male Wister rats. Male rats weighing 200±10gkg−1 had exogenous administration of testosterone and estradiol in staggered doses (three times weekly) for three weeks. The induced animals were in five groups (6 rats per group). Groups 1 and 2 received extract at 200 and 400mgkg−1 body weight (bwt) by g...

Controlled synthesis, characterization and reduction of graphene oxide: A convenient method for large scale production
Publication date: Available online 20 December 2016 Source:Egyptian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences Author(s): Tarko Fentaw Emiru, Delele Worku Ayele In this work, graphene oxide was synthesized by treating graphite powder with KMnO4 and a mixture of concentrated H2SO4/H3PO4 and reduced with ascorbic acid to produce reduced graphene oxide. The effects of reaction parameters such as reaction time, reaction temperature and amount of KMnO4 on the degree of oxidation of graphite powder to graphene oxide were studied. The prepared graphene oxide and reduced graphene oxide were characterized by UV–Visible spectroscop...

PCR-detected fungal infection is associated with fatal outcomes in cirrhotic patients with spontaneous peritonitis
Conclusion Our results reflect a strong association between SFP and in-hospital mortality in cirrhotic patients with SP that may offer a coherent explanation for the antibiotic treatment failure in such patients. Prompt PCR-detection and antifungal coverage is warranted in these cases. (Source: Egyptian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences)
