Diphyllin: An effective anticandidal agent isolated from Cleistanthus collinus leaf extract
In this study, diphyllin [9-(1,3-benzodioxol-5-yl)-4-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxynaphtho[2,3-c]furan-1(3H)-one] was isolated from Cleistanthus collinus leaf extract. The isolated compound and leaf extract were evaluated for their in vitro anticandidal activity against Candida strains such as Candida albicans, C. tropicalis, and C. glabrata. Diphyllin was found to possess higher anticandidal activity against various Candida species with the Minimal Fungicidal Concentration (MFC) of 85–145 μg and inhibition zone of 9.5 ± 0.5–13.5 ± 0.5 mm at 200 μg concentration against the yeast pathogens studied. Thus, diphy...

Therapeutic challenges in ocular delivery of lipid based emulsion
Publication date: June 2018Source: Egyptian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences, Volume 5, Issue 2Author(s): Rahul Tiwari, Vikas Pandey, Saket Asati, Vandana Soni, Dharmendra JainAbstractIn the last decade, lipid based emulsions (LEs) have emerged as a novel tool in ophthalmic drug delivery from the aspect of improved bioavailability (BA). Recent research is focuses on two main approaches for BA improvement i.e., by enhancing the corneal permeability and increasing the retention time of drug on the ocular surface. The LEs have great potential to delivery hydrophobic drug because drug molecules get dissolve in oil globule...

Screening and identification of novel inhibitors against human 4-aminobutyrate-aminotransferase: A computational approach
Publication date: Available online 6 June 2018Source: Egyptian Journal of Basic and Applied SciencesAuthor(s): S. Vijayakumar, G. Kasthuri, S. Prabhu, P. Manogar, N. ParameswariAbstract4-Aminobutyrate aminotransferase (GABA) receptors are the key mediators of quick inhibitory synaptic transmission in the midpoint of the nervous system in mammalian. Dysfunction of GABA receptors contributes the genetic disorders and chronic neurological disorders include childhood absence epilepsy, juvenile myoclonic epilepsy, adolescent myoclonic epilepsy, and seizures. They get affected by mutations of GABA subunit genes from the brain. T...

Malignant pleural mesothelioma: Presentation of a case report
Publication date: Available online 7 June 2018Source: Egyptian Journal of Basic and Applied SciencesAuthor(s): Munir Ahmad, Muhammad Omer Aamir, Khurram Minhas, Khwaja Ajmal, Iftikhar AhmadAbstractMalignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) is a rare and highly aggressive intrathoracic neoplasm that typically offer poor prognosis. In general, development of MPM is linked with a history of asbestos exposure. Herein we report a 56-year-old female patient with MPM, who presented with complains of chest pain, cough, shortness of breath and weight loss. The patient’s radiological work-up demonstrated right sided plural effusion with...

Characterization and applications of exopolysaccharide produced by marine Bacillus altitudinis MSH2014 from Ras Mohamed, Sinai, Egypt
Publication date: Available online 8 June 2018Source: Egyptian Journal of Basic and Applied SciencesAuthor(s): Sahar S. Mohamed, Shaimaa K. Amer, Manal S. Selim, Hala M. RifaatAbstractThe present study aims to survey exopolysaccharides (EPSs) production in 29 bacterial strains isolated from the sediments around the mangrove trees in Ras Mohamed area, Red Sea Coast, Sinai Peninsula, Egypt. Two of the strains were able to produce EPSs. A higher yield of EPS was obtained from isolate No. 12. Strain identification resulted in a close similarity with Bacillus altitudinis. The produced EPS was characterised as a heteropolysaccha...

Column chromatography and HPLC analysis of phenolic compounds in the fractions of Salvinia molesta mitchell
In this study the active fractions of the fern extract were separated using column chromatography and phenolic compounds present in the active fractions were determined by RP-HPLC. Ethyl acetate extract was found to possess significant pharmacological activity when compared to other extracts under study and therefore an attempt was made to fractionate ethyl acetate extract. The analysis was performed through two different mobile phases involving solvent A (acetonitrile) and solvent B (0.1% phosphoric acid in water) and solvent A (methanol) and Solvent B (4% acetic acid). HPLC analysis indicated the presence of phenolic com...
