Polymerase‐chain reaction/electrospray ionization‐mass spectrometry for the detection of bacteria and fungi in bronchoalveolar lavage fluids: a prospective observational study
Abstract PLEX‐ID uses polymerase chain reaction‐electrospray ionization/mass spectrometry for rapid identification of infectious agents in clinical samples. We evaluated its concordance with our centre's standard methods (SM) for bacterial and fungal detection in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid in a prospective observational cohort study. The primary outcome was concordance (%) between SM and PLEX‐ID. Secondary outcomes included concordance when excluding commensal oral flora, detection of resistance genes, and PLEX‐ID's potential impact on clinical management, as determined by two independent reviewers. Host factors and genetic susceptibility to infections due to intracellular bacteria and fastidious organisms
In conclusion, this review supports the paramount role of genetic factors in clinical presentations and severity of infections caused by intracellular fastidious bacteria. Characteristics of prosthetic joint infections due to Enterococcus sp. and predictors of failure: a multi‐national study
In conclusion, prosthetic joint infections due to Enterococcus sp. were diagnosed within the first 2 years from arthroplasty in >70% of the patients, almost 50% had at least one comorbidity and infections were frequently polymicrobial (54%). The global failure rate was 44% and patients with comorbidities, fever, and diagnosed within the first 2 years from arthroplasty had a poor prognosis. (Source: Clinical Microbiology and Infection)
