Role of methylxanthines in preventing acute renal failure in hypoxic newborns
Publication date: December 2015 Source:Apollo Medicine, Volume 12, Issue 4 Author(s): Kiran P. Sathe, Anjali Kulkarni Background Acute renal failure secondary to perinatal asphyxia is a serious & common problem in developing countries due to lack of appropriate delivery facilities. Under hypoxic conditions, there is an excess of adenosine production, which by its virtue of renal vasoconstriction serves to reduce the glomerular filtration rate. Studies have reported beneficial role of adenosine blockade by methylxanthines in preventing acute oliguric renal failure in hypoxic neonates. Methods We reviewed t...

Antibiogram, ESBL production and carbapenemase detection of Klebsiella spp. in hospital-acquired infection
Conclusion The type of ESBL enzyme produced and the site and severity of infection are important considerations in determining antimicrobial therapy. Therefore, active surveillance for ESBL-producing organisms is critical to describe fully the local epidemiology of a given institution and/or referring centres; currently, the carbapenems, that is, imipenem and meropenem, are the only class of antimicrobials that have consistently been effective against ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae. An unusual location of B-cell lymphoma involving the tongue
Publication date: Available online 12 December 2015 Source:Apollo Medicine Author(s): Bhavani Myla, Jaya Bhaskar Reddy Sangireddy, Vamshaj Raja Sangam, Supraj Raja Sangam Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the oral cavity is unusual. Lymphoma occurring in the extranodal site of the tongue is even scarce. Oral lymphomas are located more frequently in the gingival vestibule and Waldeyer's ring. Buccal mucosa is rarely involved. Initial manifestations of oral lesions of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma are very rare. We received a biopsy from a 78-year-old male presented with an ulcerated lesion involving the base of the tongue. Multiple stones in the knee
Publication date: Available online 8 December 2015 Source:Apollo Medicine Author(s): Raju Vaishya, Vipul Vijay, Amit Kumar Agarwal A patient presented to the outpatient department with complaints of frequent locking and grating sensation in the knee. The radiographs of the knee revealed multiple loose bodies in the knee giving a picture of multiple “stones” in the knee. The patient was diagnosed as a case of synovial chondromatosis. Synovial chondromatosis is a rare, benign condition of the joints wherein the synovium grows abnormally and produces cartilage which may finally break off from the synovium and be...

Fine-needle aspiration cytology of colloid carcinoma breast in correlation with histopathology
Publication date: Available online 5 December 2015 Source:Apollo Medicine Author(s): Dhakane Maruti, Gite Vandana Fine-needle aspiration biopsy has been routinely used for the diagnosis and management of palpable breast lesions. Colloid carcinoma (pure mucinous carcinoma) is an uncommon variant of breast carcinoma with distinctive cytological and histological features. Although the cytologic features of mucinous carcinoma of the breast in fine-needle aspiration specimens are characteristic, the correlation of these features with the ability of cytologists to definitively identify this tumor has not been well studie...

Biomarkers of sepsis: Recent advancements
Publication date: Available online 28 November 2015 Source:Apollo Medicine Author(s): Rakesh Kumar, Dinesh Chaudhari, Ritesh Kumar “Sepsis is a state caused by microbial invasion from a local infectious source into the bloodstream which leads to signs of systemic illness in remote organs,” this was the first scientific definition of sepsis proposed by Dr. Schottmuller in 1914. More than 170 different biomarkers have been assessed for potential use in sepsis, more for prognosis than for diagnosis. None have sufficient specificity or sensitivity to be routinely employed in clinical practice. The search for new ...
