Analysis of the American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status Classification System and Caprini Risk Assessment Model in Predicting Venous Thromboembolic Outcomes in Plastic Surgery Patients
Conclusion The ASA system yielded the highest odds ratio of VTE development between low and high-risk patients. The Caprini model captured more patients with VTE in its high-risk category. Combining the two models for a more heuristic approach to preoperative care may identify patients at higher risk. Level of Evidence 4 Risk (Source: Aesthetic Surgery Journal)

Autologous Fat Grafting: The Science Behind the Surgery
An invaluable part of the plastic surgeon's technical arsenal for soft tissue contouring, fat grafting continues to be plagued by unpredictable outcomes, resulting in either reoperation and/or patient dissatisfaction. Thus, extensive research has been conducted into the effects of adipose tissue procurement, processing, and placement on fat graft quality at both the cellular level and in terms of overall volume retention. Herein, we present an overview of the vast body of literature in these areas, with additional discussion of cell-assisted lipotransfer as a therapy to improve volume retention, and on the controversial us...

Botulinum Toxin and Muscle Atrophy: A Wanted or Unwanted Effect
While the facial rejuvenating effect of botulinum toxin type A is well known and widespread, its use in body and facial contouring is less common. We first describe its use for deliberate muscle volume reduction, and then document instances of unanticipated and undesirable muscle atrophy. Finally, we investigate the potential long-term adverse effects of botulinum toxin-induced muscle atrophy. Although the use of botulinum toxin type A in the cosmetic patient has been extensively studied, there are several questions yet to be addressed. Does prolonged botulinum toxin treatment increase its duration of action? What is the m...

Effect of Tissue Adhesives on Seroma Incidence After Abdominoplasty: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Conclusions There is a paucity of high-quality evidence to support the delivery of TAs to prevent seroma formation after abdominoplasty. Well-designed RCTs are needed to assess with confidence the overall effects of TAs in abdominoplasty. Level of Evidence 2 Therapeutic (Source: Aesthetic Surgery Journal)

Safety and Efficacy of Novel Oral Anticoagulants vs Low Molecular Weight Heparin for Thromboprophylaxis in Large-Volume Liposuction and Body Contouring Procedures
Conclusions Novel oral anticoagulants (Rivaroxaban and Apixiban) are comparable to LMWH for chemical prophylaxis after body contouring procedures with similar rates of drug-related complications. Further investigation is warranted with more clinical cases in order to recommend the use of this medication for routine postoperative chemical prophylaxis after body contouring procedures. The Reliability of Anthropometric Measurements Used Preoperatively in Aesthetic Breast Surgery
Conclusions The Sn-N, N-M, and BW measurements are very reliable. Dynamic measurements including APSS, STPT:UP, and STUP:IMF are unreliable. N-IMF is the only reliable dynamic measurement, and its reliability improves with increasing clinical experience. The variable reliability of preoperative measurements must be considered in the planning of aesthetic breast surgery. Level of Evidence 4 Diagnostic (Source: Aesthetic Surgery Journal)

Vertical Sculpted Pillar Reduction Mammaplasty in 317 Patients: Technique, Complications, and BREAST-Q Outcomes
Conclusions Complications data for the vertical sculpted pillar reduction mammaplasty were comparable to published results for other techniques. Complication rates are unaffected by scar pattern. Superomedial pedicle selection and larger insurance-based reductions may predispose to statistically significant increases in fat necrosis compared to use of the superior pedicle. Payor source neither affects the majority of complication rates, nor BREAST-Q satisfaction and quality of life domains. This information can be used to improve management of expectations during the preoperative consultation process. Level of Evidence 4 ...

Double-Blind Comparison of Ultrasonic and Conventional Osteotomy in Terms of Early Postoperative Edema and Ecchymosis
Conclusions The results of this comparative study suggest that rhinoplasty with ultrasonic osteotomy is associated with less edema and ecchymosis in the early postoperative period than is rhinoplasty with conventional osteotomy. Level of Evidence 3 Therapeutic (Source: Aesthetic Surgery Journal)
