Friendly Fast-Food?
Thinking they might be able to catch me off-guard, I’ve received plenty of seemingly impossible to answer questions from some investigative minds. One that always entertains me is the question of what I would do if faced with the prospect of fast food for dinner. In this seemingly dangerous, grain-heavy environment, how could I find anything to eat? Watch, and find out. The post Friendly Fast-Food? appeared first on Dr. David Perlmutter MD. This-For-That
When it comes to going gluten- or grain-free, the first complaint I always hear is the same: “But what am I going to do without my (insert grain/gluten-filled food here)!” For those of you who have the same concern, here’s a simple list of some easy substitutions you can make to phase grains and gluten out of your diet: Instead of hamburger buns, try wrapping your patty in lettuce Instead of a cupcake, try a square of dark chocolate Instead of a tuna melt, try spreading it over spinach and drizzling on some olive oil Instead of cereal, try halving a grapefruit and filling with cottage cheese Instead of nachos, try s...

Will You Join Me?
In support of Grain Brain, I’m going to be participating in what’s known as a “satellite media tour” tomorrow. Starting with an 8:20AM appearance on ABC/CW in Rochester, NY, and concluding with WVIT-NBC (hello Hartford!) at 11:45AM, I’ll be on-air in media markets from Memphis to Phoenix, and everywhere in-between. You can find a full list of my appearances in the Media Appearances section of this website. I hope you’ll tune in and join me. Perhaps I’ll be asked a question similar to one that you have about Grain Brain! The post Will You Join Me? appeared first on Dr. David Perlmutter MD. (Source: Renegade Ne...

On a Personal Note
As this day goes on, I’m increasingly reminded of how fortunate I am to be able to do the work that I do, and be able to interact with and learn from an inspirational group of individuals like yourselves. Many of you have written to me to thank me for my work, or note how I’ve changed your life, but I wouldn’t be able to do what I do without the support of this community. It’s your support for my work that continues to drive me to do more research, question commonly held assumptions, and search for the right answers. It’s in that spirit that I want to share a personal note about why I wrote Grain Brain. Many time...

Angela S.
Angela, a patient of mine, wrote in with the story of her path to a gluten-free lifestyle. The journey she undertook, and how radically her life changed as a result, is proof-positive of the overwhelming health benefits of a gluten-free diet. -Dr. Perlmutter For over the last 10-11 years I have spent a great deal of time in and out of doctor’s offices, trying to figure out why I was having so many health issues. At 16, I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), at 21 I was found to have severe candidiasis, at 22 I had to have my tonsils out, 23 I had an emergency appendectomy, and most recently I had a 10...

Three Days!
We’re now just three days from the release of Grain Brain. It’s hard for me to believe that after this weekend, the book will finally become available to you all. Most of all, I’m eager for this information to work it’s way into our community and to start getting feedback from everyone. That will be the most rewarding part of this entire experience. I’m so excited that I want to share with you a brief excerpt from the book. Here’s a brief bit from the opening paragraphs of Grain Brain: Alzheimer’s disease is a modern medical bogeyman that’s never far from the headlines. If there is one health worry that see...

Avoiding Alzheimer’s
Q: What are some ways to avoid getting Alzheimer’s? A: Here are the fundamental keys for reducing your risk of getting Alzheimer’s disease, a disease for which there is no treatment. First, dramatically reduce your carbohydrate consumption while increasing your consumption of “good” fats like fish, nuts, seeds, and olive oil. Second, get 15-20 minutes of aerobic exercise each day. This actually turns on the DNA in your genome that codes for the production of BDNF, basically the brain’s “growth hormone.” Third, make sure you’re consuming at least 1000mg daily of the omega-3 DHA. R...
