Marcelene D.
Marcelene had some incredibly kind words about Grain Brain, and I wanted to share her story with you. Hers is an incredibly powerful reminder of just how significant of an impact chaning your diet can have. – Dr. Perlmutter I was not born with a seizure disorder.  I have always been extremely healthy: exercise daily, use supplements, meditate, drink plenty of water, get regular sleep of eight hours, and my weight has always been in the lean mass area. However, in my late 40s I began having petit mal seizures. Then, at age 49, I had a grand mal seizure. This one opened up a new world of this disorder. When my neur...

Dr. Perlmutter and Grain Brain on Dr. Oz
As many of you know, yesterday I had the opportunity to spend some time with my good friend Dr. Oz discussing my new book, Grain Brain, and the role of diet in determining brain health. For starters, welcome to all who are joining me for the first time. I hope you’ll take some time to read Grain Brain and participate in the dialogue that takes place on my website and on my Facebook page. While there were many interesting and important ideas we could have discussed, we focused on the primary and detrimental role of dietary choices favoring carbohydrates as actually proving toxic to brain health. Dr. Oz and I mentioned h...

Preventing Alzheimer’s and Other Brain Illnesses
One of the main premises of Grain Brain, and much of my work, is preventing Alzheimer’s disease. You actually have the ability to make changes in your lifestyle choices to  prevent Alzheimer’s. In a recent article for The Huffington Post, I address exactly why and how to make this your reality. While our government invests millions of dollars in finding a pharmaceutical to prevent Alzheimer’s, study after study has continued to find evidence that through slight variations in our daily diet as well as dedication to exercise, we can have a marked effect on reducing our risk for Alzheimer’s as well as actually...

Olive Oil: Brain Food
Many people find it hard to believe that I’m such a vocal endorser, and liberal user, of olive oil. At almost any meal, I’ve been known to drizzle a bit of extra olive oil on top of my food. To those who aren’t familiar with it, olive oil is just a source of hidden calories. However, olive oil is actually one of the foods that has the greatest potential to keep us healthy. Consider that it’s a staple of the both the Grain Brain and highly-praised Mediterranean diet! The post Olive Oil: Brain Food appeared first on Dr. David Perlmutter MD. Alzheimer’s Questions
Q: What are the key open questions regarding Alzheimer’s disease? A: I think the key issue today in dealing with the epidemic of Alzheimer’s disease is what can be done to prevent this disease, a disease for which there is no cure. The evolving data is clear: a high carbohydrate diet leading to blood sugar elevations is a powerful pivot point in the genesis of the disease. So the answer as to whether the disease can be prevented or not is clearly a strong and resounding “yes.” Just take a look at this recent publication from the New England Journal of Medicine. We just have to broaden our educationa...

5 Keys to Eating for Better Brain Health
Although many people may see the value in the grain- and gluten-free diet proposed by Grain Brain, getting them to take the final step, to actually make a nutritional change in their life, can often prove difficult. That’s understandable, because the first few days and weeks of making any lifestyle change are challenging. In this case, those who have trouble cite an inability to find gluten-free recipes, uncertainty over conflicting gluten-free food lists, reliance on dinning out, or any other of a multitude of issues. So, I decided to write this blog post. Eating to prevent brain disease and Alzheimer’s is, of course,...

Think Outside the Gut for Gluten Sensitivity
Dr. Maios Hadjivassiliou is a though-leader in the world of gluten sensitivity and celiac disease, and is someone whose work I have studied closely in my time as a medical practitioner. When writing Grain Brain, and in my time as a practicing physician, I have always kept these words in mind. It’s a reminder to all physicians to treat the person, not just the symptoms. Jen Z.
Jen has an absolutely amazing story about how switching to the ketogenic has impacted her health for the better. – Dr. Perlmutter My name is Jen, I am 54 years old and for quite a number of years I had been dealing with some very questionable illnesses. I was overweight with no success in getting my weight down, was chronically tired, had trouble concentrating and had developed an autoimmune skin disorder called vitiligo where the skin no longer produces pigment. A couple of years into these problems I was diagnosed with metastatic melanoma and went through surgery and very aggressive immunotherapy as well as radiati...

Gayle H.
Gayle wrote me a very gracious Facebook message soon after reading Grain Brain. I asked her to tell me a bit more about what the book had meant to her, and what she sent me back was a wonderful testament to the power of the Grain Brain diet and the harm glutens and grains have done to our bodies. -Dr. Perlmutter My parents both had Type 2 Diabetes. My father died at 48 (heart attack), and my mother is alive (85), but has Alzheimer’s. There’s no one on either side of my family who doesn’t have diabetes. I was diagnosed at 42, am now 56 & my blood sugar has NEVER been under control! I’ve been taki...

The Grain Farmer’s Perspective
Last week I got an email from a wheat farmer in South Dakota. He had read Grain Brain and mentioned he learned a lot by doing so. In the interest of furthering his knowledge, he wanted to know what message I had for grain farmers. If he was to quit producing grain and wheat, he wanted to know what farmers who want to produce products that are healthy for consumers should be doing, both to produce something that can “feed the world,” and make a sustainable business for them. I was very excited to hear from him, and think it’s a fascinating topic, so I’m sharing our exchange with all of you. After reading Grain Brain...
