Stay Hydrated!
There are lots of adages about how much water we should be drinking on a daily basis. It seems like every magazine, TV show or blog suggests a new amount that each and every individual should try to intake regularly. However, all of our bodies are different, and that means we don’t all need to be drinking the same amount of water. Here’s a simple tip to help you remember how much to drink. Find your body weight, halve it, and drink that many ounces of water/day. For instance, if you weight 180 pounds, make sure you have 90 ounces of water/day. One note: for every caffeinated beverage you consume, be sure to drink an ex...

Terri R.
I remember meeting Terri for the first time, and it has been wonderful to see her take back control of her health like this. Wishing her continued good health. – Dr. Perlmutter In January 2013 a slight eye tic that I have had for a few years suddenly turned into very hard spasms on the entire left side of my face. Whether I was awake or asleep, they were constant. They were so severe my speech was slurred; I couldn’t drive, read or do much of anything. My life came to a complete halt! I was even dealing with a lot of depression as a result. I just did not feel right. I went to a neurologist in Montgomery and th...

Grain Brain Math
I’ve seen many question come in from athletes who find it difficult to thrive on the 60 grams of carbs/day that the Grain Brain diet suggests. These individuals feel they aren’t able to perform at an optimal level, and have asked if it would be possible to stretch the upper bound of allowable carbohydrate intake to accommodate for their active lifestyle. I’d like to address this question, and similar ones, in this post, so that all may benefit from the answer. Simply put: it’s not unreasonable to increase the intake if you lead an active lifestyle. Pushing your daily allowance to 90 or 100 grams of carbs/day is cer...

The Anti-Alzheimer’s Trio
During an appearance on the Dr. Oz show two ago, I was asked to highlight what I would consider to be the three items we should all be working into our diets more frequently to help support better brain health. Not knowing how popular it would later become, I outlined my “Anti-Alzheimer’s Trio,”  three foods high in “brain-healthy” fat including: Grass-fed beef Avocados Coconut Oil These items are all low in carbs and high in fat, helping to reduce some of that brain-bullying inflammation the root cause of so many ailments. Specifically, coconut oil is known as a rich source of beta-HBA, is one of our ...

Jessica L.
Jessica’s story is truly inspiring. Her battle back to better health is the kind of empowerment I hope to facilitate with Grain Brain. Adopting a Grain Brain-friendly lifestyle not only gave Jessica back control of her health, but her entire life. – Dr. Perlmutter As a travel writer with a somewhat unusual story of having sold everything my husband and I valued and owned, with no storage, on Halloween, one year ago, we left our lifetime home, family, and friends to travel the world and write about our daily adventures and share photos. Just one year prior to that, I wasn’t able to go to any of our grandch...

Happy Halloween!
Many of you might think I would be down on Halloween. From the bowls of candy that get passed around, to the binge snacking in the wee hours of the morning, Halloween is certainly not the best day for our nation’s collective health. However, I don’t want you to think the Grain Brain diet is without its perks. There are plenty of sweets you can enjoy on this night of treats and trickery. The take home message is that while the recommendations below do contain carbs, if you are careful in terms of limiting your consumption, you won’t become the party pooper. Here are some treats you could consider enjoying, or conv...

Sophia
had adopted a very Grain Brain-friendly diet some time ago, but her success is just further evidence that this lifestyle really does work. – Dr. Perlmutter I’ve been eating all-organic for 14 years now, but starting about 2 years ago, I stopped eating wheat products and noticed a steep reduction in knee pain and hip pain within about a month. Hip arthritis runs in my family, so I was thrilled that something as simple as avoiding wheat could help so much. Then, about a year ago, I eliminated all grains (except the occasional quinoa side dish and a semi-annual pizza from the best place on earth), and I greatl...

Jerry C.
Jerry’s story may be short, but it’s just another example of how powerful removing grains from your diet, and body, can really be. – Dr. Perlmutter. I have had heartburn/GERD most of my life. I started the Paleo diet in May of this year and immediately removed all grains from my diet. Within a week all of my heartburn/GERD was gone. I no longer take Nexium. I have lost over 25 pounds, walk 4 miles each day and overall feel better than I have in many years. Who would have though removing grains from my diet would cure my heartburn/GERD?! -Jerry C. Shawna K.
Shawna’s story is similar to what I hear from many individuals: family health history motivates them to learn more about disease cause and prevention. – Dr. Perlmutter When my dad was about 55 years old (about 1975), he started having problems with his leg. It would kinda drag behind him and he would have a hard time picking it up and walking correctly.  They assumed he had a stroke or had complications from when he broke his leg a few years prior. Fast forward to 1985. He starts having serious balance problems and is diagnosed as diabetic. So he changes his diet and drops about 50 pounds. As the years go on t...

Must we be entirely grain-free?
If you’ve read “Grain Brain,” then you know that signing up for the Grain Brain diet means going grain- and gluten-free. Many individuals try to ease into a grain- and gluten-free diet. By and large, this should be avoided. Remember, halfway measures work halfway. In this video, I’ll answer the question of whether or not it’s okay to stick with some grains, or as it’s more commonly phrased, “But Dr. Perlmutter, there have to be some good grains!?” The post Must we be entirely grain-free? appeared first on Dr. David Perlmutter MD. Rob H.
Though folks are often skeptical of the gut-brain connection, Rob’s story is proof that dietary changes can manifest themselves in improved mental condition and cognition – Dr. Perlmutter I am not a medical professional, not an academic in any way, however, having suffered from a major depressive disorder my entire adult life, I have made researching my illness and treatment of if a priority for the past ten years. At 54 I have, over the past 20 years, taken at least a half-dozen different anti-depressant medications as prescribed by respected psychiatrists in Ontario and Alberta. Can you avoid grains and gluten on a vegan diet?
On my Facebook page, an ever-increasing number of people have asked me about whether or not a gluten-free and grain-free diet, the Grain Brain diet, is compatible with a vegetarian and/or vegan one. Many interpret my call to avoid grains, something that has become a staple in vegetarian and vegan diets, as an endorsement of the meats, proteins, and fats individuals on these types of diets avoid. However, though I may not be a vegetarian or vegan, there is certainly no reason one can’t be a vegetarian/vegan and on a Grain Brain-friendly diet. In fact, it’s quite easy to be on a vegetarian or vegan diet that is gluten-f...

The Very Delightful Vitamin D
One of the most important nutrients/vitamins we have in our body? Vitamin D. In my practice, I always make a point to check Vitamin D levels in my patients, as Vitamin D plays a role in activating over 900 genes that play a role in fighting/preventing cancer, inflammation, and cognitive issues (like dementia and Alzheimer’s). I am a big advocate of Vitamin D3 supplementation. However, before adjusting your supplementation, keep in mind that the amount of Vitamin D that you may need may be difficult to determine, unless you ask your physician to follow your blood test.
