Coming together is a beginning
Imaging is a pivotal component of modern healthcare and an essential part of many patient journeys. The complementary and combined skills of all stakeholders interested in cardiovascular imaging are vital to sharpen our mission to provide high-quality educational programmes. Team work lies at the very heart of the EACVI. It is undoubtedly through the selfless efforts of our committees and volunteers that our association is moving forward and becoming stronger.  Read more Topics: Non-invasive imaging: Echocardiography, MR/CT, Nuclear (Source: ESC News and Press)

Taking a patient centred approach
Fausto Pinto, who becomes President of the ESC next September, plans to introduce the system of accreditation that he first pioneered as President of the EAE (now EACVI) into the wider cardiovascular curriculum. ‘No one would fly a plane unless it had been certified so why should patients accept to be treated by doctors unless they’ve the confidence of knowing that they’ve achieved pre-defined levels of proficiency and undertaken minimum numbers of procedures,’ says Pinto.  Read more Topics: Non-invasive imaging: Echocardiography, MR/CT, Nuclear (Source: ESC News and Press)

Consider bariatric surgery in obese patients
Authors: Alegría Barrero A, Alegría Barrero E, Alegría Ezquerra E. Severe obesity is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. Bariatric surgery is the best means to ensure obese patients with effective weight loss. Weight loss in turn improves other risk factors of cardiovascular diseases. Find here a review of guidelines and the cardiologist's role, indications and tools, pre-operative practice and the results and costs associated with this intervention. What’s happening with the EACVI Research and Innovations Committee?
The EACVI Research and Innovations Committee was created a year ago to establish a research network to facilitate large scale high quality studies in cardiac imaging. While there are many large multicentre studies demonstrating the value of medical devices and pharmacological agents, no studies so far have evaluated the additive value of one imaging technique over another to cure patients.Read more Topics: Non-invasive imaging: Echocardiography, MR/CT, Nuclear (Source: ESC News and Press)

Promoting heart valve clinics to facilitate risk stratification and 'watchful waiting'
"Echocardiography provides the cornerstone for valve disease. It’s key for establishing aetiology, quantifying severity, studying progression, determining repercussions on the ventricle and assessing the likelihood of successful repair"Read more Topics: Non-invasive imaging: Echocardiography, MR/CT, Nuclear (Source: ESC News and Press)

Vascular imaging, a step beyond cardiac ultrasound
"While cardiac and vascular ultrasound can be considered complementary they’re definitely not the same. We need to acknowledge that performing vascular ultrasound requires a completely different skill set from echocardiography. To ensure that cardiologists are safe and proficient they need to have a formal training."Read more Topics: Non-invasive imaging: Echocardiography, MR/CT, Nuclear (Source: ESC News and Press)

Integration of Cardiovascular Imaging: an idea whose time has come
"The importance of moving from a technique driven approach towards a patient and problem driven approach has increasingly been recognised. In order to provide the best possible care to our patients it is important to understand the complementary values of all imaging techniques and their respective roles in clinical practice."  Read more Topics: Echocardiography (Non-invasive imaging), Magnetic Resonance (Non-invasive imaging), Non-invasive imaging: Echocardiography, MR/CT, Nuclear, Nuclear cardio & CT (Non-invasive imaging) (Source: ESC News and Press)

What does being an EACVI Club 35 Ambassador involve?
"‘When I joined the EACVI Club 35 three years ago I felt that all echocardiographers had the same questions, doubts, and dreams and recognised that enabling good interaction was fundamental to helping them develop into better doctors. Doing the twist: taking assessment of LV function beyond ejection fraction
Echocardiography methods for assessing Left Ventricular (LV) function that go beyond ejection fraction (EF) need to be introduced routinely into clinical practice, says Otto Smiseth. The widespread introduction of Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and Speckle Tracking Echocardiography (STE) to measure myocardial velocity, strain and twist, he stresses, would greatly improve the evaluation of the left ventricle in conditions such as heart failure.Read more Topics: Non-invasive imaging: Echocardiography, MR/CT, Nuclear (Source: ESC News and Press)

Education Committee of the EACVI: the new challenges
"Education has undoubtedly become a top priority for EACVI members and attendees of our meetings. Due to important changes in compliance rules, the support of education initiatives now represent one of the most popular ways that pharmaceutical companies can interact with scientific associations. Clinical Research needs investigator initiated trials: AFNET-EAST has enrolled 1000 patients
The pan-European clinical trial “Early treatment of atrial fibrillation for stroke prevention trial (EAST)“ compares two different treatment strategies in atrial fibrillation and exemplifies the added value of independent investigator initiated trials for clinical progress. Many questions which are important for medical care, such as the relevance of early rhythm control therapy, will not be addressed by commercial trials.  Read more Topics: Arrhythmias, Atrial Fibrillation (Source: ESC News and Press)
