Surgery in severe mitral regurgitation: focus on patients with no symptoms or complications
Authors: De Bonis M, Al-Attar N. Mitral valve repair is often recommended in severe mitral regurgitation however absence of symptoms and episodes of atrial fibrillation, a preserved left ventricular function and normal pulmonary artery pressure either warrant early repair or watchful waiting depending on 1) the patient's characteristics, 2) surgical risk, 3) likelihood of an effective and durable repair and 4) local expertise. Cardiologists urged to reduce inappropriate radiation exposure
Radiation from cardiology procedures equals more than 50 chest X-rays per person each year. “Unfortunately, radiation risks are not widely known to all cardiologists and patients and this creates a potential for unwanted damage that will appear as cancers, decades down the line. We need the entire cardiology community to be proactive in minimising the radiological friendly fire in our imaging labs.” Read more Topics: Invasive Imaging: Cardiac Catheterisation and Angiography (Source: ESC News and Press)

Fit teenagers are less likely to have heart attacks in later life
Swedish researchers found that every 15% increase in aerobic fitness was linked to an approximately 18% reduced risk of myocardial infarction 30 years later.  The study found that the relationship between aerobic fitness and heart attack occurred regardless of the men’s body mass index when they were teenagers. However, fit but overweight or obese men had a significantly higher risk of a heart attack than unfit, lean men.  Read more Topics: Cardiovascular Disease Prevention - Risk Assessment and Management (Source: ESC News and Press)

New AF classification by ECG will help GPs deliver personalised treatment
AF is currently diagnosed by an ECG, often by a general practitioner (GP). But the ECG is underutilised with respect to identifying the underlying cause of AF, which would help GPs make personalised treatment decisions. GPs need to know how ECG readings correlate to the cause of AF and the Lugano meeting was convened to discuss how to start such classification.  Read more  Topics: Atrial Fibrillation (Source: ESC News and Press)

Management of atrial fibrillation still suboptimal in Europe
ESC presents preliminary results of Atrial Fibrillation General Registry: Statistics show that oral anticoagulant use has increased, but new oral anticoagulant (NOAC) use is still low.
