Disease-specific, health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of people with chronic wounds —A descriptive cross-sectional study using the Wound-QoL
Conclusion Despite the fact that the wound care situation seems to be optimal, the quality of life (QoL) of people with chronic wounds often is impaired. By using Wound-QoL in day-to-day wound care, the care of people with chronic wounds could be optimized on the basis of patient-related outcome factors. (Source: Wound Medicine)

High frequency of MRSA in surgical site infections and elevated vancomycin MIC
Conclusion The findings of this study show a high frequency of MRSA in SSIs. Due to the elevated MIC of vancomycin, we suggest consumption of other effective drugs for the treatment of SSIs. (Source: Wound Medicine)

Quaternized chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/sodium carboxymethylcellulose blend film for potential wound dressing application
In this study, blends of N-(2-hydroxyl) propyl-3-trimethylammonium chitosan chloride (HTCC), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were prepared by the solution-casting method to develop films. The blend films were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and light-transmission measurements. The results revealed that in the blend films, HTCC, PVA, and CMC interacted by hydrogen bonding and were partly miscible. The effects of varying amounts of CMC on the mechanical properties, water absorption, swelling properties, and moisture pe...

Analysis of VEGF AND TGFB1 proteins in normal and streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats, during treatment of formulations of Aloe Vera, Henna, Adiantum capillus-veneris, and Myrrha
Conclusions The present study demonstrated that the mentioned herbal extracts might be effective in wound healing through the improvement in the amont of TGFβ1and VEGF-A proteins in wound site of diabetic rats. (Source: Wound Medicine)

Effect of surgical wound care methods of the lay open technique on the outcome of chronic sacrococcygeal pilonidal sinus management
Conclusion The lay open technique could successfully achieve a zero (0%) recurrence rate with a very low rate of postoperative complications. Special consideration should be attributed to the wound care methods and materials used because they play a major role in the outcome. Hydrogen peroxide showed a superior wound care efficacy. Microbial Siderophore as MMP inhibitor:An interactive approach on wound healing application
Publication date: Available online 8 December 2016 Source:Wound Medicine Author(s): Sita lakshmi Thyagarajan, Giriprasath Ramanathan, Sivakumar Singaravelu, S. Kandhasamy, P.T. Perumal, Uma Tiruchirapalli Sivagnanam Iron is the most essential element found in the environment, but it is difficult to assimilate by microorganisms. Acquisition of iron from the environment became more complicated as iron (II) in the presence of oxygen oxidized to iron (III) oxide and hydroxide, becoming insoluble at neutral pH. To overcome this situation microorganisms produce organic molecules known as siderophore. The primary function...

Restorative Effect of Organic Germanium Compound (Ge-132) on Dermal Injury
Publication date: Available online 20 September 2016 Source:Wound Medicine Author(s): Hiroko Matsumoto, Hikaru Iwafuji, Junichi Yamane, Reiri Takeuchi, Tadahiko Utsunomiya, Akira Fujii We investigated the effect of organic germanium compound (Ge-132) on experimental dermal injury in rats and cultured human dermal fibroblasts cells. For in vivo studies, the dermal wound was formed by extracting a full-thickness skin of parietal region in rats. The dermal wound was treated with 250μl of 1.8% Ge-132 isotonic solution or physiological saline solution as a control once a day. At 1, 3, 7, and 14 days, the area of wound ...

Endarterectomy for asymptomatic high-grade internal carotid artery stenosis —Does age alone really matter?
Conclusion Age alone was not a predictor of inferior long-term outcome after carotid endarterectomy for asymptomatic high-grade stenosis. However, patient selection is crucial. If adhered to epidemiological data for risk factors of stroke and death, patients with a mean age of≥75years can be treated safely with acceptable long-term results. In the analyzed population older patients with a contralateral symptomatic carotid territory have a significantly inferior 5-year ipsilateral stroke free survival compared to patients<75years at surgery. Arginine-enriched oral nutritional supplementation in the treatment of pressure ulcers: A literature review
Conclusions This review shows that there is substantial evidence supporting the positive effect of nutritional supplementation with additional protein, arginine and micronutrients to promote pressure ulcer healing. Currently, there is only one large study (N=200) with level 1 evidence. It may be postulated that at least one extra comparable level 1 study is needed to draw firm conclusions on the importance of key nutrients in complete pressure ulcer healing. Polihexanide for prevention of Wound Infection in Surgery. Is the contact time essential? POLIS-Trial: A historic controlled, clinical pilot trial
Conclusions Crude and adjusted SSI rates of both groups were nearly similar, so we concluded that this pilot data showed no measurable difference and a trial with larger sample size would be needed to determine a difference. (Source: Wound Medicine)
