Recommendations for designing and conducting veterinary clinical pathology biologic variation studies
Abstract The recent creation of a veterinary clinical pathology biologic variation website has highlighted the need to provide recommendations for future studies of biologic variation in animals in order to help standardize and improve the quality of published information and to facilitate review and selection of publications as standard references. The following recommendations are provided in the format and order commonly found in veterinary publications. A checklist is provided to aid in planning, implementing, and evaluating veterinary studies on biologic variation (Appendix S1). These recommendations provide a valuab...

Evaluation of assays for quantification of DNA in canine plasma as an indirect marker of NETosis
ConclusionsBoth assays as modified in this study are suitable for measuring DNA in canine EDTA or citrate plasma. However, performance of the fluorescence assay was impacted by pigmentemia, and it was less sensitive than the ELISA in detecting the presence of nucleosome material in the plasma. Evaluation of the effects of time, temperature, and specimen storage on in vitro lactate concentrations in healthy dogs
ConclusionsResults support analyzing lactate specimens immediately. If lactate analysis is delayed, anaerobic refrigerated specimens should be analyzed within 40 minutes, and aerobic refrigerated specimens should be analyzed within 25 minutes. Room temperature specimens stored either aerobically or anaerobically should be avoided as lactate concentrations may be falsely increased. (Source: Veterinary Clinical Pathology)

Bartonella henselae in canine cavitary effusions: prevalence, identification, and clinical associations
ConclusionsViable B henselae organisms occur in pleural and peritoneal effusions of dogs; the clinical relevance of which remains unclear and may represent opportunistic infection. Associations found in this study included seasonal variation, age, breed, and site of effusion. (Source: Veterinary Clinical Pathology)

In vitro effects of dalteparin on thrombin generation in canine plasma
ConclusionsThe CAT assay can measure the effects of dalteparin in canine plasma, resulting in significant dose‐dependent decreases in ETP, prompting further in vivo investigation. (Source: Veterinary Clinical Pathology)

Evaluating Atlantic bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) leukocyte differential counts comparing the CellaVision DM96 and the manual method
ConclusionsDespite a small sample size, the DM96 appeared to provide a viable alternative for automated neutrophil counting in blood of bottlenose dolphins. Whether the counts are comparable in animals with highly pathologic differential counts must be addressed in follow‐up studies, preferably with more study animals.
