Heterozygosity for P2Y12 receptor gene mutation associated with postoperative hemorrhage in a Greater Swiss Mountain dog
Abstract A 3‐year‐old, female Greater Swiss Mountain dog developed a hemoperitoneum following an exploratory laparotomy and ovariohysterectomy. Platelet count, PT, APTT, and plasma von Willebrand factor antigen concentration were within RIs. A buccal mucosal bleeding time (BMBT) was prolonged. Given the probability of a hereditary thrombopathia, the dog was administered desmopressin, fresh platelet transfusions, and aminocaproic acid to control hemorrhage. Subsequently, DNA testing for the P2Y12 receptor gene mutation identified the dog as being a heterozygote (carrier). Further platelet function testing was performed ...

Analytic variability in the enumeration of neutrophil subpopulations in canine blood
ConclusionsThe analytic variability of Hypo‐ and Young‐PMN is lower than that of Bands. This retrospective study did not allow us to investigate the diagnostic potential or the clinical relevance of these cells. However, the low inter‐ and intra‐observer variabilities with these cell populations suggest that the count of Hypo‐ or Young‐PMN may better identify acute inflammation than the count of Bands. Hematologic reference intervals and age effect in European Strigiformes
ConclusionsOur findings provide evidence that laboratory data from chicks of Strigiformes are different compared to juveniles and adults; therefore, separate RIs were defined. (Source: Veterinary Clinical Pathology)

Specificity of, and influence of hemolysis, lipemia, and icterus on serum lipase activity as measured by the v ‐LIP‐P slide
ConclusionsThese results show that Spec cPL is specific for pancreatic lipase, while the v‐LIP‐P slide is not. In addition, hemolysis and lipemia had no effect on Spec cPL, while severe icterus resulted in a slight decrease in Spec cPL. Hemolysis and icterus had a significant effect on the v‐LIP‐P slide. The effect of lipemia on the v‐LIP‐P slide cannot be conclusively established based on this study. (Source: Veterinary Clinical Pathology)

Hepatic AA amyloidosis in a cat: cytologic and histologic identification of AA amyloid in macrophages
Abstract A 3‐year‐old, spayed female, Domestic Shorthair cat presented with anorexia, lethargy, vomiting, probable hemoabdomen, and multiple masses on the right lateral liver lobe. Clinicopathologic and imaging abnormalities included anemia, azotemia, icterus, and hepatomegaly with hypoechoic masses. On cytologic evaluation of a fine‐needle aspiration of a liver mass there was abundant extracellular pink‐ to purple‐colored material between hepatocytes. The amorphous material was stained with direct fast scarlet (DFS), and green birefringent areas were observed under polarized light, confirming the presence of amy...
